        You’re noticing that Gell-Mann Amnesia.

I looked it up yesterday because I kept seeing it in an Angela Collier video title and I realised that despite watching the video and re-checking the info several times, I could never remember what Gell-Mann amnesia was, and that was too ironic to be allowed to continue. So this time instead of looking it up and going “ooohh, that’s right, okay, nevermind”, I went, "okay, now repeat it to yourself until you’re sure you won’t have to look it up again".

I feel like I have simpler reasons for leaving Reddit.

The third party apps quit working and the site and app run like shit and take forever to load.

    Simple problems, simple solutions.

That’s actually the main reason most left, Lemmy has never seen a bigger increase in MAU before or after the death of 3rd party apps.

Not to say the other stuff isn’t important, but for me Reddit WAS Apollo. Without it, it didn’t even feel like the same service. Enough people felt the same about their preferred apps that they left en masse in 2023.

I’m not sure why anyone would ever buy Reddit stock. There is no money to be made in Reddit. They failed to make any money before they went public, and they’re failing to make any money now.

They tried the whole NFT thing, failed. They’re trying to sell the data to AI companies but once that’s sold they can’t sell any more of it because the benefit of Reddit data was historical data unpolluted by AI, but new Reddit data is polluted by ChatGPT posts and is therefore worth less.

It’s not even about banning people, it’s about the fact that Reddit was never a sustainable business model from the start, at least not in the traditional capitalist sense where you’re actively trying to make a profit to please shareholders.

The only benefit to owning Reddit stock is if you have voting shares and can manipulate the algorithm to benefit you in some way. Suppress some voices, amplify others to back what you want to do etc. but you need money to burn in order to achieve that because you aren’t going to be making money directly by owning Reddit stock and manipulating public opinion takes time.

If they’d been stalwart about banning automation and keeping original, legit human content pure, they probably could have used it as a fountain of fresh data for AI, for polling, for engagement farming, and for promotion.

The site was still growing even despite the admin induced atrophy. But they just couldn’t resist killing the Golden Goose.

I disagree that Reddit would gain in value over time if they kept banning automation, because it is increasingly difficult to avoid AI-generated material polluting your dataset, no matter how much you avoid automation and try banning it. Inevitably, some AI-generated material is going to get in.

It’s a problem in two ways:

        1. The vast vast majority of data on Reddit has already been sold, so you can’t rely on that data for future revenue
        2. The remaining data that’s current is polluted by AI and is therefore worth less than the historical data because the more AI pollutes your dataset, the more likely it is to lead to Model Collapse, where an LLM is poisoned due to unverified data generated by other LLMs

I am firmly of the belief that sites like Internet Archive will be some of the most valuable companies in the AI space, because they hold an immense amount of untainted data created prior to 2019.

I was a good user. Dark humor isn’t hurting anyone. Reddit will die. Just like every other popular site.

I was sign up number 3. I emailed Spez his own source code because he had the error reporting on his Web Server set to “VERBOSE”.

I was permanently banned for an answer in an AskReddit thread that amounted to “what is true in your line of work that you can’t say”. My answer was that (edit: as I work in a highly female-dominated field of social work 30 women for every man)… non-males are insanely violent and one of the huge lies that is held in the public consciousness is that “men are the violent ones” when the reality is all people are violent, and there’s a tremendous amount of IPV especially in same-sex partnerships. Banned for “advocating violence”.

Edit oops I edited the wrong comment lol

I reported a comment for basically saying that men are the only violent sex, and they temp-banned me for abusing the reporting system. The explanation message (canned, I’m sure) said that abusively reporting people is a form of harassment or bullying, or something like that.

Eat shit reddit, and fuck spez.

edit: Based on my experience and what others are saying, I have to wonder, were they trying to burn it down from the inside?

Consider conducting some actual research and study, instead of deciding your and biased ideas represent reality.

The fact is that in terms of frequency non-males are worst. Males more severe physical damage per incident.

But don’t argue with me here, if you wanted actual knowledge on the subject you’d have it already.

its pretty given, seeing as how they are using googles recaptcha technology, and OPEN AI to allow access to data/content, plus its useful for troll farms from russia in general, since its allows targeted propaganda messaging.

specifically REDDIT like google as recaptcha v3, which is a more spyware-ish where it records your acitivty on the site to “looking for botting” behaviour.

Good. As shitty as they’ve been and as hostile as they’ve become to their own users, I’d live little more than watching the entire damned things crash and burn. More (but still not very) likely though is them desperately selling off before it completely self destructs. Of course if they do sell it, whoever they sell to will likely either make things worse or just shutter it. Most likely they’ll stay the course and continue hemorrhaging usefulness and thus popularity.

Any way you read the cards Reddit is in a tailspin that they seem unwilling to do what is necessary to pull out of. Which is to say, they’re too stubbornly idiotic to reverse their stupid, stupid changes and make a more open, user friendly, and community friendly platform. And I don’t see Spez being that smart.

It certainly was what people drove there. That doesn’t make money. The only value that counts for the bottom line is the data ultimately for marketing purposes. And the reach and trust that makes it great to sell shit.

It’ll also be a great propaganda vehicle. Which might be worth even more in the current climate.

Anyways Reddit is dead. It ran far longer than many thought. But I think the cadaver won’t stay fresh long enough to be eaten.

I think many of the tech giants are becoming scared. Because it might be a bit of hassle to just use another platform ultimately it’s fucking easy to migrate and the when the momentum is there it can go pretty fast. No one really needs Amazon or Facebook or Reddit. And people really are pissed off. Fuck them. All these valuations for tech are just ludicrous when in the end the main driver is selling people shit more effectively.

Musk pressuring spez into harsher moderation is probably part of why I was actually banned. Harsher moderation followed by a bot farm the richest man payed for to report every account that is critical of Nazis.

I’m not even kidding. At this point the amount of comments on Lemmy that I’ve read that had 10+ year old Reddit accounts banned for “inciting violence” is crazy. I was one of them a few months ago. Told a dude denying a Nazi salute was a Nazi salute to “go to hell where Nazis belong”. Was banned within an hour. Permanent and IP/Metadata banned. Instant response of “no” to my unban request.

This is not a unique experience either. Leave reddit like it’s the plague. Digg died because of bad decisions. Reddit seems like it’s gonna become 4chan but for the mainstream. I don’t know if it’ll die. I think they’re purging anyone that has leftist profiles.

a ludicrous ban, is when i got “temp banned for report abuse” turns out if you report too many people who have spreading misinformaiton or lies, you get automatically flagged. the community is keeping the trolls in check, while mods and reddit admins sititng on thier asses of selective moderation.

and we know certain subs, are owned by a few power mods. LEO controls multiude of mods about crime and law subs(this includes the videos subs). askdoc is probably the only sub/medical is correctly moderated, they do it to prevent pseudoscience/ misinformation, one time after '16 election, someone try to analyze Hillaries facial movements as having some kind of stroke(the mods shut that down very quick)

I had two main accounts. My oldest account got permabanned for a joke about Nick Fuentes. After his address got doxxed and he pepper sprayed a woman who rang his doorbell back in December of last year, I said “hey as an incel he should be happy that the ladies know where he lives now so they can share a cocktail with him”, and I added a cartoon gif of a Molotov. It was obviously a joke, but they said it was “promoting/glorifying violence”. I ate the bullet on that one because they were technically right, even if they were a bunch of humorless twats.

My other account got banned about a month ago when I up voted a comment that was just a picture of Luigi Luigi (the Nintendo character) smoking a cigarette. Again for “promoting/glorifying violence”.

Elon Musk is a weak little crybaby and Steve Huffman is a pathetic coward.

Yeah they’ve come out and said recently that even interacting with any content or comments that could so much as be perceived as being related to Luigi Mangione is a violation of Reddits policies against promoting violence. People have been getting warnings that their accounts are in danger of being permanently banned just for visiting certain subs. Not for posting. Not for commenting. Not even for voting. Just for visiting.
