I don’t think Russia will do anything about the situation, prompted or not. The USA and Russia are not allies per se; their relations are not - how to say - balanced, on the same level?

I think Snowden being right where he is suits the Kreml very well.

And I don’t see Trump asking for him either; how would he benefit from that?

Probably nothing, since Putin wants to encourage future defectors.

I doubt Trump will do anything that could be perceived as encouraging more whistleblowers, at least while he’s in office.

Best case—a Democrat wins the next election, Trump gives up on trying to stop it, and pardons Snowden on his way out.

Just putting it out there that Snowden and the journalist he worked with, Glenn Greenwald, were and are both a lot more right wing than they seemed to a lot of folks on first glance.

Both of them have some good viewpoints that are seriously undermined by other more unsavory viewpoints they have.

Glenn, yes. Snowden I don’t think so. My impression of him is that he wants to unite everyone against surveillance, and doesn’t want other issues to get in the way of his messaging/work about that. I could be wrong.
