I do mean stuff like removed scenes from international airings, replacing objects like cigarettes or vine with any other objects.
I watched From Dusk Till dawn on TV prime time in germany. The version was more than twenty minutes shorter, and context was lost so bad, that it even confused me after having watched the original 8 times.
The weirdest thing, characters were voiced over by different people than the rental version I knew.
Dubbing is a crime
I prefer dubbing most of the times. German films dubbed in english and english films dubbed in german.
Since they don’t use boom mics anymore but go for surround Sound, it’s just mumbling that’s hard to understand.
Germany dubbs every movie, so the quality is usually pretty good, since it’s a business, and not a neccessity like in russia or turkey where you get one bored speaker for all characters. Bonus points if he dubs both male and female.
How can any reasonable person see some cowboy or a NY gangster’s lips move and then hear some German or French words spoken.
It’s completely ridiculous.
Not to mention the many things that are lost in translation and don’t work in that language.
Even the titles of the films are changed.
Now and then they show some of that on TV as a joke here in Belgium or NL.
It never stops being funny and you wonder how long these people will continue with this silly practice.
It’s also one of the reasons these countries speak poor Enlish in comparison.
You learn a lot from hours of hearing the actual language.
Now there’s less of a difference with the web, but still.That’s not an issue, they can imitate cowboys pretty well in german.
It only becomes ridiculous when they have to translate a german person in an american movie.
You get used to it pretty quick. Watch three dubbed movies and the original will sound weird. I started Doctor who in english and cant stomach the german version now. Series that I started in german are the same, I cant switch to the english format easily.
The only argument that I see is that it helps with english.
Funny enough, almost all the content I consume outside of movies is in english. I hate german youtubers and streamers. None of them talks or sounds naturally.

I recently watched the first season of Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Monsters and there’s a scene where I’m pretty sure Bandit Keith was originally threatening Pegasus with a gun. Without the gun, it just looks so ridiculous. And what did 4Kids have against rice balls? Arceus forbid American kids should learn anything about foreign culture, we must pretend these are donuts.

The original U.S. dub of Pokemon was the same re: riceballs. It didn’t make sense in the 90s, and it doesn’t make sense today. The worst thing that can happen is a kid asks their parents if they can try onigiri.
Oh no! Now we either have to tell our kids “no,” or we have to do the research to find somewhere that makes/sells it, or attempt to follow a new recipe ourselves. How will U.S. culture, composed of nationalities from across the globe, ever survive this tremendous upheaval!?
In all seriousness, onigiri is delicious and I wish there were greater demand for it across the U.S. Even in my ethnically-diverse blue state, I only know of one place that makes onigiri, but it’s far and a pain in the ass to travel to.

Onigiri is really easy to make yourself if you can get the ingredients. Tuna mayo onigiri is the bomb when you wake up with a hangover.
It’s more about nobody ( that wasn’t already into Asian food) knowing what it was. Even parents. And it not really being easy to look it up in the late 90s
But Pokemon was a show about a fantasy world of made up animals with magic powers. 4Kids felt kids would be able to grasp that, but not rice balls.
Kids could accept a weird yellow mouse that could shoot lightning bolts, they would have accepted some weird food they hadn’t heard of either.

It might have been easier to learn about if shows didn’t censor it out from the start. How are people supposed to talk about something if it’s deliberately removed? It’s like people went, “Americans don’t already know about this food, so let’s make sure they don’t learn about its existence.”
I remember 1997 on The Simpsons, when Marge wanted to open a franchise. One of the options (which her rivals took) sold pita. I was a kid, and this was the first time I had ever heard of pita and tahini. They were simply described as “pocket bread” and “flavor sauce.” The introduction of new foreign food items didn’t upset or confuse the audience.
It’s simply bizarre that riceballs are treated like some particularly incomprehensible thing.
Also, research may have taken longer (and involved trips to the library), but anyone who wanted to learn about something in the 90s still could’ve done it. It wasn’t pre-literate, just pre-internet.
I had the same experience when I watched the Pretzels episode with Fat Tony from the mafia as a kid, but in Spanish. They called them pretzels.

There’s an episode where Yugi and Kaiba are in a double duel and the threat is if they lose they’ll fall through a glass floor to the shadow realm. Somehow I strongly suspect the threat in the Japanese version was they’ll fall to their deaths. The ludicrously replace all threats of death with the shadow realm.
Let’s not forget the time Yugi and a magician were chained to the floor with buzzsaws inching closer each time they lost life points that would “send them to the shadow realm”

I remember when Young Guns aired on a cable channel in the 90s there’s a scene at the climax when Billy the Kid actually says “Murphy, you son of a bitch…” and shoots the baddie in the head.
So this cable channel edited it for him to say “Murphy, you sorry old buzzard…”. But the headshot was still intact because this is America.
John McClain kills every member of a heist crew then throws the boss off a skyscraper to his doom and the only concession made for tv is “Yippee ki yay Mr Falcon.” America.

There’s are two (that I’m aware of) versions of Deadpool that are shown on US TV. One is pretty normal, cut up mostly for time but with all the curseing and violence you’d expect, the other though has hilarious dubs over a good bit of the swearing (which is in theory easier when the main character is in a full face mask I guess?). The one that sticks out in memory is Deadpool’s line “Suck a cock” is dubbed as “ha ha ha”.
Removing the hard R rating from the character deadpool makes you realize what an irritating and childish character he is. I remember seeing him pop up in a G rated spider man show and it’s cringier than a deadpool cosplayer

On the tv airing of “How to Lose Your Guy in 10 Days,” they have a scene where they are playing a bluffing card game call “Bullshit” where you can call bullshit on people who you think are bluffing. They replaced the word “shit” with “spit” so everyone is shouting “bull spit” at each other. I found this to be so ridiculously lame that it made it kind of funny.

The funniest bit was, when they had a flyer that literally said “not S&P approved”, because S&P (standards and practices) wouldn’t approve the flyer saying “bottles will be spun”.

A lot of this kind of thing happens. There’s limits on bunch of food contaminants that are higher than zero because zero is unrealistic (for example on the amount of rat feces in grain). Generally, the ones closest to the limits will be the ones chosen to be processed further into something where them being second-rate is less obvious. The pretty produce gets sold raw, somewhat uglier produce goes into shredded or finely chopped goods where you can’t see the difference. The flour that’s closer to the limit for rat shit content get processed into factory baked goods where it won’t be as noticeable, etc.

Dragon Ball has a scene in one of the earlier episodes where Goku gets desperate and confused when he finds out Bulma doesn’t have balls. In Brazil, the panty removing scene was cut, but him screaming and waking up Bulma was kept, with the chatter being fully nonsensical “I was hungry and looking for food!”
I also remember seeing that a country, I think Thailand?, censors even male pectorals, so a lot of DBZ fights had big blurs over the characters.
I like DB/DBZ and some anime, but holy shit is anime fucking cringe. Even modern anime. It always throws off the mood. Like you’ll have some serious anime with real serious themes, and all of a sudden the main character will like grab some girl’s boobs and make a goofy sound (or some other variation of cringe fan service) and you’re just like “wut?”

If something I say is wrong or bad then i want to know why. If what the other people say are reasonable then i may adjust my viewpoint.

If i feel that i misrepresented what I was trying to say (i.e. that most anime, not ALL anime have fanservice) then why wouldn’t I want to edit the post? There’s multiple versions of Brazil - the American version is just a little bit shorter. Those changes aren’t a big deal though. Howeverr, theres a made for TV version referred to as the “Love Wins Out” ending.
The movie is a parody of 1984 (absolutely hilarious and worth watching as are most things involving Terry Gilliam. I’ll spoil it a wee bit but the point isn’t these plot details.)
Basically, instead of Winston and Julia being lovers standing up to Big Brother, you have a delusional idiot who fucks up his pretty easy job in the evil totalitarian government by obsessing over and stalking a woman who has zero interest in him. His grip on reality is tenuous at best.
At the end, he fucks up and gets the Room 101 treatment. We’re treated to a fantastical scene as La Resistance comes in to save him, exciting bombings and car chases and reality bending visuals that are too ridiculous to be real. Him and the woman ride off into the sunset as badass rebels escaping the evil government.
That’s where the “Love Wins Out” movie stops. It’s clearly a hallucinatory dream sequence, and the actual ending reveals our “hero” has been tortured into insanity.
Like, the whole point of the movie is that she doesn’t like him, doesn’t know him, doesn’t want to know him. We don’t even know that she’s in La Resistance - it’s a great “unreliable narrator” film. But this TV version gives a character who exists to be an unlikeable moron the girl and a happy ending.
The way they censored the gay out of Steven Universe in Russia was just comically stupid. There’s a couple, Ruby and Sapphire, with Ruby being a more hot-headed butch type, and Sapphire being a cool-headed femme. So, Russia gives Ruby a goatee:
Even though, mind you, the dub still has a female VA for her. Anyway, last season of the show, Ruby and Sapphire get married. The showrunner didn’t want them to be able to censor it as easily, so she put Ruby in a dress and Sapphire in a suit:

Simpsons itself has had multiple scenes cut out of episodes that are now really hard to find, in the worst cases it can be the entire end of an episode. The one that really sticks out is a scene where a celebrity ges jumped by cletus and a bunch of other rednecks and brutally shot to death with a lot of gore, the episode later got censored to end when cletus points a shotgun at him and eventually cut out the scene entierly making the episode rather abrupt.
