I’m definitely not wrong here. Literally everyone.

Stop it.

I’d really like to see blocking of cell signals with shielding paint made legal. Too many people talking on speakerphone in public places like buses, theaters, and libraries. You wanna talk on your phone? Go outside.

In the US… “Federal law prohibits the operation, marketing, or sale of any type of jamming equipment that interferes with authorized radio communications, including cellular and Personal Communication Services (PCS), police radar, and Global Positioning Systems (GPS).”

Does paint count as equipment? I don’t think there’s been a court case yet. You’d think it would be legal under privacy and property ownership law because the “jamming” doesn’t bleed onto other people’s property. But who knows with the mess of a government we have.

If you check the law in question, I imagine it will have a specific definition of jamming as an active transmission, not a passive physical barrier.

I mean theaters and libraries should be escorting you out. Talking on the phone on a bus though is not that bad. Better than while driving.

There was an episode of QI where Stephen was playing with a device where you point its directional microphone at someone, and it plays their voice back with a slight delay making it very difficult for them to speak. The guests had to try to read a children’s book aloud while he pointed it at them. None of them except Alan could do it.

I would like to buy one of those devices lol.

Similarly, my ringtone is the dun-Dun-DUNNN from bad mysteries, aka Professor Professorson’s ringtone from Community.

I’ve never seen someone annoyed when mine has gone off in public. I am rarely in public though.

I’m not going out of my way to approach you and say your ring tone going off every 15 seconds is annoying. Engaging with strangers only to complain isn’t something I agree with doing, generally.

Nope, I have a different Owen Wilson ‘wow’ for each of my contacts and apps and it has (rarely) blurted put at exactly the right time during a meeting and been met with laughs.
    So I’m keeping it.

I agree with you if you can put your phone in a pocket.

However as a counter-point: a lot of women keep their phone in a bag where they wouldn’t necessarily feel it vibrate because women’s clothing often doesn’t even have pockets, so I can’t really say they should mute their phone notifications.

I have no idea why chat apps default to making a sound when messages arrive and are sent when the screen is on though—that’s entirely obnoxious, no excuse for leaving that enabled

So let’s start adding pockets to womens clothing and stop the mandatory purse plague at its core.

I totally agree. My wife is an amazing person and learned to sew. She now makes customs clothing for people including our two girls. Since they were 3 and 4 they would say “look Dad! My dress has pockets!”

At this point 9 and 10 they no longer point it out because every thing they own has a pocket. Leggings, yeah side and back pocket. Pants, yeah an actual pocket sized for function and not one that fits a single mint. A dress, yeah a hidden pocket along the side seems. I am super happy my girls get to grow up with this small life adjustment.

My phone is always in do not disturb mode and only 1 person can ring me while in do not disturb mode. All texts and other notifications are forever silenced. It helps me focus and not become dependent on my phone.

But it doesn’t really bother me if other people’s sounds are on. Bigger things to worry about imo.

It’s just a phrase to express that this isn’t a big deal. You’ve got to pick and choose your battles, and to most people, this one isn’t worth fighting. You definitely don’t speak for

        The entirely of humanity

especially in a post that you made specifically about unpopular opinions.

No, it’s not “just a phrase” otherwise folk wouldn’t pick up on it.

It literally is just that. Most of us don’t give a shit enough about it to fight against it. There are bigger problems to worry about is just a fact.

Also, are you suggesting that a literal phrase isn’t a phrase, because it’s your opinion?

I’m not thinking its a chest pump. I’m literally saying that i dont think it’s worth me stressing over it. It’s a phrase to express that. But go on thumping your chest or whatever you do to communicate while pompously thinking you speak for all of humanity

Chill, OP. You’re using argumentum ad populum without checking with the populum. I don’t notice and I haven’t heard of this one before. Maybe it’s more personal than you realise, a device anxiety association. Do you get phantom vibrations from you pocket? I can speak for myself that I’m so used to being on silent, other’s phone notifications are barely noticed background events.

I mean the whole point of a notification is to well, notify. Vibration alone isn’t always adequate. Unless it’s going off repeatedly I don’t see the issue. Some sounds are normal in public.

Personally my phone is always on vibrate except for calls from certain people.

I work in a field that is essentially always on. If I am on a project I may have to stop what I am doing and go home to start working. It sucks but it pays well to cover my student loans and for my kids to be able to do the activity they want. If I miss an email from a client that needs a response I may lose the company that client. Then potentially after that my job.

Sorry it bothers you that I got an email. My family comes first.

Not sure what situation or event annoyed you but a broad blanket statement without consideration is just as wrong as whatever is annoying you.

As a “young” adult it absolutely baffles me people use notifications. I already check my phone enough without them, and if I did have notifications on I’d literally get a ding every 20 mins. If I’m expecting a call sure I’ll turn them on, but apart from that it’s an alien concept to me.
