“All right, everybody. I know there’s been a sexism problem here at Discord, and I’m here to change that. If we really work hard and power through, I truly believe that we can work our way up to the kinds of numbers I was able to achieve back at Activision Blizzard.”
I picture him saying this while he hangs a picture up of Bill Cosby in the board room. Yes, that was a thing at Activision/Blizzard. Time to start finding a new platform. Peak enshitification achieved.
Oh yeah, we’re about to see things get really shitty on Discord.
Already have embedded ads. I’m about done with this shit and willing to have no one to talk to just so I don’t give discord the satisfaction of using their Spyware.
Fuck Discord, I hope they go pedal to the medal and destroy the company in record time.
Pedal to the “metal”.
Sorry, all I do is win, so the floor of my car is covered in medals…
RIP discord.
o7 rip Discord, you wont be missed.

element isn’t bad tbh. I’ve been using it lately, and it’s actually caught up a lot.

basically foss e2e encrypted discord. https://element.io/

It’s also federated, so anyone can run a server and any of your users can join any other servers. I’ve been slowly migrating my discord server over to it

I like Matrix, but it isn’t exactly the easiest platform to use and definitely has some jankiness with voice/video calls.
Revolt is pretty good! Most of the features you want from discord are already there. It’s FOSS and servers can be self-hosted.

The public servers that are just operating on discovery - sure. I have a private Discord with friends I’ll be looking to transfer, as well as a community with external intake sources.

Maybe for this crowd. Almost no services I use aside from email were federated, before I went to Lemmy and Mastodon. And now it’s email, Lemmy, and Mastodon. Average users just chasing a good experience don’t really care about federation, despite its benefits.

When you had the foresight to walk away several years ago and you’ve just been on the sidelines watching it get worse and worse and worse.
i would leave right now if I could take my communities with me. but I sadly have to wait until the app is so unusable that EVERYONE is leaving the app in droves.
That’s the kind of logic that keeps shitty platforms afloat
I’m the server owner. these are active hubs. I’m not gonna just destroy my own communities just because some random person on the internet wants to place blame on someone with no power to change the platform.
you’re blaming the wrong people for discord getting shitty.
“Well I’ve been rolling down this well-worn road…”
Discord is never going to be profitable lmao
It can be a loss leader for microsoft, but at the end of the day, discord will always lose money. The operational cost of discord is way too high
This change just means more enshittification like with every ceo change.
Honestly they should just go full on points shops for spending money on xbox, like steam. Give out points to use for customization. That way they could at least make some incentive to use xbox and probably boost sales.
Does Microsoft own Discord?
You just made me look it up and apparently they canceled it when I heard about it
So nvm discord is doomed LOL They’re purely running on vc money and sooner or later this company will explode
But why? People just want to talk and chat. The technology has been around for ages! Let users host their own servers
Discord is like the dread pirate Roberts combined with a used car salesman. “I’ll probably kill you tomorrow, you should buy nitro”
Quit discord last year. Moved my core friend group onto Signal. Video streaming sucks but it addresses most of my other concerns.
Potential alternatives and their issues:
-
Guilded: owned by Roblox, faces same data/privacy concerns
-
Discourse: backed by venture capital, same as above
-
Revolt: slow development, no game streaming, otherwise decent
-
Matrix: high technical barrier of entry, but promising.
If you’re looking to kick discord as well:
-
For game streaming, try Parsec (with their echo cancellation trick)
-
For movie/video streaming, try Hyperbeam.
-
I’ve coped long enough, that’s the final straw for me.
I’m cancelling my $3/month subscription and putting $1 to my instance, $1 to Wikipedia, and $1 to the Internet Archive. Not a lot but it’s better than discord.
Doesn’t seem like I can use PayPal for Lemmy and I don’t wanna go through the process of another payment provider :/Patrion supports PayPal
So the end of discord is nigh
Okay boys and girls, time to start discussing the next migration. Where we goin’?
Host your own TeamSpeak server.
The client is getting occasional beta release, but nothing for the server in years, although stuff is apparently being worked on. It seems they want to make it function more like Discord.
revolt chat or matrix?
I could get behind a revolt ;)
How about matrix?
I’m enjoying Element/Matrix so far.
I’m looking to check out spacebar at the weekend. Seems they had some DMCA issues a few years back, but it looks as though the repo is still active.
No idea whether the discord integration stuff still works, nor the details around the DMCA (I assume it’s due to the old name being fosscord) but it’s piqued my interest enough to give it a shot.
Failing that, I’ll probably look toward revolt or a matrix + element setup as they seem to be the main suggestions for discord alternatives.
I’m already working on a tool to replace discord for my gaming group. Planning on rolling out a stack of open source IM and Voice/Video chat with ActivityPub for text chat rooms.
Integrating them all into one app is where I’ll have trouble, especially since when replacing big corpo tools they need to work perfectly the first time or nobody willvdver want to use it.
Can you provide a list of your stack? Doing the same has crossed my mind but I haven’t done much research yet
I’m still early in the research phases but so far the plan is a combined client for Galene and Mastadon. The current plan is to rip apart the apps as they exist and pull out the chunks useful for my needs, then build a basic webapp to interface with them that I can share with my friends.
Ideally I’d like to eventually roll out a docker image of the server stack as well so anyone can host it with just a couple clicks.
That’s a big project, I respect your ambition
Enshitification applies to EVERYTHING
Linux hasn’t enshittified. Neither has the fediverse. Enshittification applies to everything corporate and for-profit.
Linus dies
welp! pack it up! How’s BSD this time of year?
Originally it was a good descriptor of tech companies starting out as useful and then turning to shit as they leaned into becoming profitable, but if you was to use it as “things get shitty in favor of profits” then I guess it could apply to everything.
I liked the original where it had nuance and was a good shorthand specific to the tech trends.
Words can entshitify? Ahhhh. Everything given enough time will gravitate to its natural state of sucking ass. It’s the you didn’t die when you were the hero scenario all the way down.
I mean, thats what happened to “literally” hundreds of years ago…
As long as we are using enshittification for anything going downhill my word example is lose getting an extra ‘o’ which makes reading ‘I hate it when I loose my keys’ painful. Why the hell is that so common now?
