There are many communities still on reddit for which there are no alternatives on lemmy as of yet and if you want it to surpass reddit you need to stop with the toxic attitude and the false sense of superiority especially since a lot of the content on this platform is just reposts from 4chan, x, reddit. If curious folk come here and all they see is toxic threads and reposts why would they stay here? This is mostly in response to the comments I’ve seen on here not the thread itself.

Really? I’ve seen Lemmings are much more competent, way higher debate ability, far less disinformation. Also I’ve seen this 10x so far in a month: “sorry, you’re right”. Almost never saw that on Reddit. And I’ve had to say it many times too.

Its true. I have friends still using it and they can’t seem to break free. I used Reddit since its inception, but left it immediately during the api-pocolypse and never looked back. I did the same with Proton when the CEO praised the GOP. I have no loyalties to tech companies.

I will die on this hill - the Proton CEO was right when he praised GOP in the context of the time, and situation.

The situation was: GOP accidentally* going against Big Tech and pro-citizens, while Democrats were defending Big Tech (just to be in opposition-by-default to GOP). Specifically, the CEO’s tweet was about how Trump nominating a fairly loudly outspoken anti-Big Tech person to a very high position in the DOJ was a good thing.

The time was: just before Trump 2 took office and showed what a shit-show his admin, and GOP have become.

The guy was ONLY talking about Big Tech and anti-trust policies nothing else. He never said “GOP is good for the US” or “GOP is good for the world”, he said “GOP are doing a bunch of anti-trust and anti-Big Tech moves right now and it’s good”.

People dropping Proton for this reason are the epitome of throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

      * it was because Trump was throwing a hissy fit at Meta and Twitter for allowing people to express anti-Trump opinions.

The problem with this, is if he was paying attention AT ALL, it’d be clear that the republican stance “against big tech” was always a lie. The fact he just bought their BS is enough for me to not trust the company.

Nobody ever suggested otherwise. I specifically mentioned that myself.

The fact he just bought their BS is enough for me to not trust the company.

He didn’t “buy” anything. He didn’t become a Republican, WTF are you people talking about? He literally said, that at the time GOP was more anti-Big Tech and pro-consumer than the Democrats and that a specific appointment was a good choice.

Since when does stating facts mean you’re “buying someone’s BS”?

It’s a common way to say someone was dupes by something, “they bought it” meaning they fell for it.

Mate, are you OK? I know what the phrase means and I’m struggling to see which part of my reply gave you the impression otherwise…

there was antitrust brought under the Biden admin. [link]

What is your argument here, exactly? That Trump appointing an anti-Big Tech person to lead the anti-trust section of the DOJ was… a bad thing… because Biden did stuff for anti-trust…? Hmm?

The point being GOP was only anti big-tech in rhetoric (…) He is either lying, or not paying attention.

              Sigh

Don’t take it the wrong way, it’s not an attack, just a statement of fact: people like you are the reason democracy is failing.

In most countries democracy has a 4-year turnover. One party comes in, says “we’ll do X”, gets to do their thing for four years, and then… It turns out that “X” takes 6 years to implement so people like you go “they lied to us, they didn’t do X!”. Now, the other party sees that and says “oh, trust us, we’ll do Y” and “Y” is a bullshit non-issue or a non-solution to an actual issue, but it only takes 3 years to implement, which gives them a nice boost and a potential for re-election.

This creates a vicious cycle of parties becoming more and more populist, saying they’ll “solve poverty by increasing minimum wage” (where the actual solution is massive changes in regulation and policy that would take a decade to implement), or “kick out immigrants to give back jobs to true XYZ” (where “true XYZ” don’t want to do the jobs that immigrants take, and the solution, again, would be proper regulatory (and executive!) action, but that takes a decade or two to implement). Etc., etc.

Now, back to the point - yes, you’re right. A lot of stuff happened during Biden’s tenure. But A LOT of that stuff was started by Trump’s administration, or the actions of the Trump administration opened the doors for a lot of what Biden did.

Here’s a list of some of it:

DOJ Antitrust Lawsuit Against Google (2020)- Focused on Google’s deals with Apple and others to maintain default search engine status, thus harming competitors.

FTC Antitrust Lawsuit Against Facebook (December 2020)- To potentially break up Facebook by forcing it to divest those companies.

DOJ Antitrust Review of Big Tech (2019)- Laid groundwork for later actions, like the 2020 Google lawsuit.

FTC Tech Task Force (2019)- Re-examined acquisitions like Facebook’s of Instagram and WhatsApp.

Trump’s Executive Order on Section 230 (May 2020) to weaken legal protections that shield social media platforms from liability over user content and moderation decisions. - didn’t get much done as actual change would require Congressional action. But it intensified scrutiny of Big Tech.

Other indirect actions: Trump supported conservative-led Congressional hearings and investigations into Big Tech’s political power and influence or pushed the idea that companies like Amazon were harming small businesses and exploiting USPS

The fact that this is being upvoted so much I think demonstrates a big misunderstanding of how the fediverse works.

Nobody owns Lemmy and if a instance does something shitty it costs hardly anything to change instances. Nobody owns the lemmy software, and other softwares like mbin/piefed exist too with the same content.

There is only one Twitter whereas anyone can start “a Lemmy” (instance). I am using a different instance than you, for example. So if mine enshittifies I can go somewhere else and still have access to the broader network.

No because Twitter is a walled ecosystem, you can’t move to Bluesky and interact with people on twitter for example.

if .world says being a minor is bannable suddenly there’s no minors anywhere on Lemmy. A minor example that is understandable, sure, but it’s just to show that a single large instance can cause a lot of change if they decide to.

Lemmy.world is the second largest Lemmy instance, and less than a third of all users. If someone doesn’t like their rules it is trivial for a person to move to an instance who’s ruleset better aligns with their wishes.

With Mastodon you can migrate your account, Lemmy can’t migrate (yet). But the difference between Fediverse and commercial platforms is that you can access the same network of content from different instances. With Twitter/Reddit etc. everyone is forced onto a single instance (and a single moderation policy).

The protocol itself could surely start its journey if enshittification? In which case different, possibly incompatible, branches would spawn fragmenting the Lemmy space. Still miles better than the whole thing burning to the ground. But with no shareholders looming around (yet) we can hope it won’t come to that.

I guess the closest I know of is Maps.me and Organic Maps? Maps.me was open source, but got purchased and enshittified, so Organic Maps was forked from it. And now there is some drama with the Organic Maps shareholders/co-founders, so unless that is (or has it already been?) sorted out we’re likely to see another fork of it.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t the main dev(s) members of lemmy.ml? So I can certainly see how differing political views could skew the development of the main branch of Lemmy.

People say this all the time but never can give even one example of a potential problem. Preemptive forking sounds insane to me. The only thing Twitter has over something like Bluesky is the fact that Bluesky is so milquetoast and nice that you don’t really get any of the drama you get on Twitter. Like, I never see comic fans going “Black Bolt would DESTROY Saitama in a fight!” and anime fans going “Nu uh! ONE PUNCH!” on Bluesky.

Same with Lemmy tbh. Lemmy is 80% politics, 5% memes about politics, 5% memes about Lemmy being better than Reddit, and 10% Linux.

It used to be so much more Linux, but replacing that with politically charged statements parading as memes isn’t a much better alternative. My two least favorite parts of Lemmy are how every conversation is somehow just one degree of separation from Linux or Nazis. Meme about dogs? Now the conversation is about genocide.

Almost all of the discussion I see is liberals saying all conservatives should be executed, leftists saying all liberals should be executed, and tankies saying that anyone not willing to self-immolate in protest of the genocide in Palestine should be executed (but don’t you DARE mention any genocide not perpetuated by the West.)

I came here to discuss niche hobbies and technical stuff. What I wanted to use reddit for but I strongly disagree with their business practices since this whole API blocking crap from last year.

They will follow us everywhere. If the medium is commercial, the capitalists will capture it. If its public, the extreme social interest groups will capture it.

“Extreme social interest” like universal healthcare / basic income, human rights, being anti genocide, pro-human rights, basic privacy rights… list goes on.

My good fellow, extremists are not here shitposting, they’re running the biggest economies of the world. World’s richest man did 2 nazi salutes a couple weeks ago. Twitter is full of nazis. Spotify is hosting Andrew Tate podcasts.

“Public/open source = bad” is exactly what those people want the public to think, because it can’t be monetized and easily controlled.

Reddit has become practically unusable. Mods censor EVERYTHING even if it doesn’t “break the rules” it’s worthless trying to have honest discussions.

Their threshold for “calls to violence” is ridiculous. Got a ban for commenting I’d slap someone just like the person who got pranked slapped the person who jump scared them.

My ban. A bloke purposely ran over a 12 year old boy that was riding his bike. Seems a group of youths had verbally hassled this bloke so this was his reaction. Thankfully it was caught on film. This happened about 50 miles from me here in Australia.

Well anyway my comment was that if he had run over one of my two boys he might have ended up in hospital, there might be broken bones and I might end up in prison. I mean it was an angry knee jerk reaction to a horrible situation.

Well I got a site wide ban for threatening violence. I didn’t actually threaten anybody. No warning, no temp ban, not just banned from that one sub. Appealed but it fell in deaf ears.

My ban was for saying there should be mass protests outside the building in which that American judge was held and that these protests should prevent anyone from entering or leaving until that judge is released. Apparently, that’s “violence”, even though it’s self-defence against the violence of a fascist state.

Luigi is a bright, shinning example of what happens when the powers that be stop listening to the complaints and needs of the peasantry.

You’d think they’d have learned that the last several dozen times lords got too high and mighty and triggered a violent revolt/uprising… but alas…

Dude im so tired of bans and creepy tracking that ensures you cant engage on the site… I do enjoy the reddit user friendly platform but im so sick of the overreach from the mods… i have had an account up for a while that just got permanently banned because I accidentally engaged with a sub i forgot had banned my og account… and because of that old account that had an IP ban it was somehow tied to my new account made a whole year later! Even though i use duckduckgo with full protection and cleared all my data… but Im done… its not worth the headache…and trying to use lemmy world now feels better. Still getting used to it here

your comment has been automatically removed because you didn’t choose the right flair.

your comment has been automatically removed because it doesn’t adhere to “fuckshitstack” guidelines

your comment has been automatically removed because it didn’t kiss the mods’ asses enough

your comment has been automatically removed, to become verified, take a photo of your driver’s license, your social security card, and yourself holding both of them, in each arm. SUBMISSIONS WITH BOTH CARDS IN ONE HAND WILL BE DELETED! PLEASE, READ THE STICKY.

        I fucking hate Reddit.

So spot on! And i needed a place to vent. I’m glad lemmyworld lets us do that. But I’m so done with reddit. They leave up absolutely toxic awful comments and users that are actually bots, but then punish and route out real users… I didn’t really believe the dead internet theory until i realized how much reddit targets real users…

DuckDuckGo doesn’t hide your IP. Your IP is a fundamental networking number used to route traffic to your computer. It can also change for many home internet service providers over time, so it’s a bit stupid of Reddit to use them, though they might be using more advanced fingerprinting mechanisms and merely saying IP.

I once said on /r/nintendo in the context of Nintendo increasing the price of games that even if you enjoy their products, there’s no excuse to defend their anti consumer practices and that there was way too much “corporate boot licking” among Nintendo fans. It wasn’t a statement directed at anyone specifically, but I got a temporary ban for “derogatory name calling.”

Like…I fully understand it’s going to be a sub of Nintendo fans, and I also consider myself a fan of a lot of their games, but if you aren’t allowed to be critical…then banning me for that post kinda proved my point, lol.

Not even censoring, also outright stealing for karma farming. I’ve had perfectly normal photos being criticized as not within the rules for bullshit reasons. An alcoholic drink aggressively marketed in two “variations” for men in women in pointlessly gendered was taken down with the bullshit excuse, that men and women have different metabolisms so it wasn’t pointless. A week later there was a post about this drink with a lot of upvotes and my exact photo from our local supermarket. It was posted by one of the very active accounts. Mods are taking down promising content in some subs just to post it themselves.

I got an instant permanent auto ban for joking about pushing someone down the stairs. It was ‘supporting violence’. I appealed and it was auto rejected. It’s become absurd.

Smh I’ve heard about a ton of stupid reddit bans but this one takes the cake. I guess if you keep reporting it they’d have to actually do something about it so they prefer to ban you and pretend it doesn’t exist.

      Mods censor EVERYTHING

This is not a Reddit issue, this is a “subreddit I’m subscribed to” issue. I’m not seeing that problem.

The problem I AM seeing, though, that’s ACTUALLY making it unusable is how they fucked up the latest UI redesign. Ctrl+Enter no longer works, spellcheck is force-disabled when using the Markdown editor, posts no longer open in a panel, you have to open each one in a separate tab or reload the main feed every single time, everything is slow and clunky… It’s just badly written, badly optimised and badly designed overall.
