Seems like a goldmine of content for them to work on for the next decade+. Plenty of people will never experience these worlds or stories due to the turn-based combat, so giving them the Remake treatment could be the only way an audience ever finds them.

I would like to see FF8 remade next. It’s the next logical choice becauase 8 comes after 7 and it’s a solid world to leave the FF7 rut for.

The rest could be good, too, but FF8 would probably be the easiest to pull off successfully.

I’d have loved turn based combat to remain in FF7 remake.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the remake bit it doesn’t feel as tactical as the old one in my memory.

I think there’s a turn based mode you can enable from the options menu. I know there was one for 15.

I think I enabked it, but it’s clearly not the same as the system from the old games.

If Square decides to do another FF remake, they’ll either skip over 8 and do 9 instead, or they’ll go back and do 6. That’s what I think. But if they did 8, they better overhaul that stupid Draw system.

I… loved the Draw system from 8. I would just sit back and be like “well, I guess I’ll stock up for my adventure.”

      Good times.

Leave Draw exactly as it is, thanks. Maybe increase magic damage scaling but the Junction system is neat and the whole thing ties into the plot.

Only if they DON’T drop the classic turn-based combat. I actually hate the idea of a ‘remake’ that changes genre entirely.

1-6 recently got the Pixel Remasters, and before that 3 and 4 had the DS remakes. I’d like to see proper remakes of 5 and 6 myself, but that’s unlikely to happen since the Pixel Remasters exist.

7, personally I’d play a faithful remake, but it’d be silly to make one since they already have the non-faithful ‘remake’.

8 is the one game that could benefit the most from a non-faithful remake. It’s a game that’s worth remaking because the original was such a mess. But I feel like a bit of a hypocrite for saying that right after complaining about FF7. What I’d do is still keep it turn-based, but completely overhaul Draw and level scaling.

9 would be the most likely candidate as a fan-favorite that could be kept faithful and still hold up well. And rumors have been swirling around for a while that one may be coming.

10 and 12 already have the HD Remasters, and those are excellent. So no need.

11 is the most in need of some way to preserve it for future generations, but I don’t know how that would even work. Could it perhaps be adapted in some way like they did with Dragon Quest 10 Offline?

13 onward, too new to need remakes. (And also I have no interest in the direction the series has gone since then anyway)

You leave 8 alone! It’s not turn based (in a strict sense) and Draw/Junction is the foundation of the entire game, mechanical and narrative. The scaling is a little weird because there’s two main experience bars and only one of them makes enemies tougher and it’s not explained, but so be it. All I want is the Japan exclusive Chocobo World and updated graphics without changing the visual style and maybe a soundtrack that doesn’t sound so MIDI.

No but I want them to do a remaster of Chrono Trigger in the pixel style of Octopath

I don’t say remake because they would make it not turned base to be casual friendly and fuck that one up too

I still don’t understand the sentiment that turn-based doesn’t sell. We just got Clair Obscur breaking expectations.

Part of it is, you have to make the combat interesting visually, tactically, and sometimes even tactilely. Some games get that right: Persona 5, Like a Dragon, etc.

I would also go on a limb and say that 99.9% of strategy in turn taking games is terribly designed. Buff attack, use strongest attack. The one that I really wanted to see more of is a system like Cosmic Star Heroine’s.

If by capital “R” Remake you mean the full three-game treatment FF7 received, Kitase’s already said they’re not planning on doing that again. Future remake projects, should they happen, will be smaller in scope. An FF9 project was leaked twice and is heavily rumored, so it’s most likely next (if it wasn’t quietly cancelled, anyway). We also don’t know exactly where it would fall on the spectrum between remaster and remake, but the Epic leak suggests it’s more of a remake.

FFT is the one I’d like to see the most, and it has even more rumors around it. But, I would expect that would look something like Tactics Ogre Reborn, mostly a remaster. It could really use some modern features, like a move undo and some UI enhancements, like a helper for zodiac signs. What I want the most from it is an orchestrated soundtrack. It’s a gorgeous work that deserves the full treatment. I’d also love to see more content, like extra side quests, but I’m not holding my breath on that.

FF6 is the most logical next step after those in terms of enduring popularity, especially if they want to target the Western market. It would probably be super controversial in the fandom, though.

If they ever gonna remake 8 it needs to be one game, just a solid 20-30 hour experience. The story needs a rewrite anyway. It is bloated and the dialogue has too much cringy emo shit. Would translate horribly to voice acted dialogue.

I think they should stick to turn based combat and just modernize it like Persona or Clair Obscur. As an FF fan I don’t like the modern action based combat the series have turned to. It doesn’t feel like a proper FF game. And the action gameplay just isn’t great. They should create a new series for these type of action games that doesn’t have to carry the FF branding so they don’t have to tack on these final fantasy gameplay elements to the action combat and turn it into a half baked mess.

UE 5 sucks major dick though. Like oblivion is a cool AI generated remake and gold use of that engine. But it’s far from optimized. My frames go from 120-45 in a matter of 2 seconds in the same area.

Not an actual problem. A lot of people simply won’t try those games because they’re old, others because they only know how to play Roblox, Minecraft and Fortnite.

For me it’s very much turn based combat. I hate turn based combat and I’ve found very few exceptions to that rule.

I’m down to play games of all ages… As long as they aren’t specifically that type of turn based combat.

Turn based strategy? Great! Turn based card game? Epic! Turn based combat? I’m bored out of my mind

Out of curiosity, which games with TBC have you played? I understand that the most common problem with them is that it’s just a dumb numbers game, bigger number wins, which also means lots of grinding

I’ve attempted pokemon many times because it’s constantly recommended. I’ve tried a few of the turn based final fantasy games. Quite a few indie games. Some persona was attempted at some point…

The only exception to the rule is Dragon Quest and I have no idea why but that’s been consistently the only turn based games I can play for more than a few hours without uninstalling. I’ve only managed to finish one of them but either way that’s still pretty good for me for this genre.

FF7 was the slam dunk choice because it is not only so iconic, but as the first 3D entry the original is also absolutely god-fucking butt ugly. I can see why FF8 would be logical in a sense, but I’m not sure it has the popularity to capitalise on. It has its charm but it’s hardly most people’s favourite Final Fantasy. It would be a cool choice though.

I don’t necessarily think any of the other entries need remakes as badly. I think FF6 is absolute peak as it is but it would probably be most likely in my opinion. It is also vastly popular and iconic so there is a lot of money to be made there. And I can’t deny that even I would be curious to see what it would be like if given the full remake treatment.

FF7 remake is cool for a lot of reasons, but we’ve got countless reasons to support the idea that turn-based combat isn’t the barrier to playing those old games.

Whenever someone asks if a game should be remade, I always say no. I’d rather get a new game!

That being said, I spent the entire weekend playing Oblivion.
