I know this is terrible and I feel for those whose lives this will impact. But it really does show the self defeating nature of fascism. While talking big about invading two countries, why not weaken your own military? Great job, fascism!

The one thing I doubt we’ll see anytime soon is an actual draft. Trump’s going to do a lot of stupid shit, but I doubt he’ll do that one. Afterall, why would you want to train the people you don’t like how to fight?

I mean he seems like he wants to use the military to do a lot of things. Take over Greenland, martial law, etc. It’ll be hard with a shrinking military.

Do I really need to explain why the US war machine doesn’t defend anyone other than US oligarchs’ money and occasionally Israel? Hint: The war on terror.

But there’s a lot else they currently do or even could be doing if some reforms happened that would be more helpful than the shitty things they do.

Nothing the US military is currently doing is more helpful than the almost five million deaths they caused throughout the war on terror or the horrific genocide with 200k+ deaths that they’re supporting, but I digress.

But most importantly, your bringing it up here only serves to derail a different discussion that is important in its own right, and that this thread was created to discuss. The most important thing is that you’re not helping.

You make a fair point but consider: The social current that Trump was able to get elected twice by riding was created most directly by the war on terror and the subsequent rise of American chauvinism and nationalism. This sort of glorification of the military has to be shut down hard or you’ll either fail to get rid of Trump or get Trump 2.0. This sort of jingoist attitude (see: the other guy who replied to me) is very much at the root of Trump’s fascist takeover, and needs to be removed root and branch before anyone can hope for anything resembling a better tomorrow (or, to tie into the OP, for trans people to not be thrown into concentration camps).

US militaries number 1 strong point is logistics. Putting the full force of that behind disaster relief would be astounding

Maybe try to have some hype sessions like this about your duty to ignore illegal orders.

I’m not joking, you should really do this.

This ought to fix stuff . These people are so on point and care so much about doing things that will help the world function better. Or they just throw shit out there like this to appease the extremely stupid people and to distract from all the other horrible shit they’re doing. But I don’t believe that, it’s too cynical.

      We should have fewer

We can decrease our spending by like 6/7ths and we’re still spending the most on our military compared to other countries.

Everyone’s looking for cuts to fix the deficit, we should start with the military and healthcare insurance/ middlemen that bloat these industries.

Yeah, sure. The issue is this won’t decrease funding. If anything, it’ll increase it. They have a certain number of troops they want to maintain. If they don’t have them, they’ll spend more on advertising. I wouldn’t be that upset if some of the funding went to increased pay, but that’s likely not going to happen, at least not significantly.

    Dear Trans US soldiers,

You can join the French legionnaire and get an easy European passport after a few years of service.

Just so everyone is aware, the French Foreign Legion is an elite group of soldiers. If you aren’t extremely physically fit or ready for 5 years of military suck then this isn’t the option for you.

I didn’t mention this because I addressed US soldiers. If you are already a soldier I’m sure you’ll easily get in.

No, very much not the case. It’s an extremely competitive unit that very few are able to join due to the extreme physical requirements, you do get to walk last in the military parades with their own marching pace, wear leather aprons and don’t have to shave, so you get to be a total bad ass, but it’s a lot of work

I’m a veteran who looked into joining the FFL. They’re basically all special forces (even the admin) so if you aren’t ready for that level of training you’re going to fail recruitment and won’t be able to join them.

Also of 100 recruits that apply only 10-15 are selected.

I have no idea about this.

How many of those have a military background? I saw some documentaries where they followed recruits and most of them failed because they lacked dedication, a decent understanding of French, or were physically or mentally unfit.

Well, you’re describing a large part of the US military. Many enlisted soldiers just joined to escape a bad situation, so they aren’t that dedicated. They certainly don’t know French, if they even know English that well.

They teach you french during basic training so that wouldn’t be an issue. You can see this at the FFL faq page where the first q and a is about french fluency.

Are you sure those guys in the documentary were already past selection? You have to be selected (10/100) and then you also have to pass basic training which is difficult.

I thought being able to communicate in the most basic of French or English was a requirement for the psychological test.

The last one I saw was were they followed people trough the selection process and then followed the ones that passed. One of the ones that passed gave up during basic training. I didn’t check if there was a second process after basic training.
