That and he doesn’t want to lose the option of a coalition partner in the future.

He wouldn’t even ban them. The current discussion is just about initiating the process with the Bundesverfassungsgericht (“supreme court”), which would then decide whether to ban them. But what do I know? 😑
He still likes their votes in the Bundestag.
Also he’ll come around in 4 years, when he cannot benefit from them.
