Not the first time this has happened either, here’s another similar case in Atlanta: https://abcnews.go.com/US/mother-boy-killed-hit-run-driver-probation-community/story?id=14158040
Here in Sweden, me and my sister walked alone to school every day since we started at seven years old, I remember the day before the first day at school, mom walked us to and from school to show us the way we should walk to be safe, this included crossing a commuter railroad and several intersections. When we were in year four, the school allowed students to bike to school.
Quite the difference in thinking about cars and safety…
the man who hit the family and never stopped, reportedly admitted drinking “a little” alcohol earlier in the day. He also admitted to being on painkillers and being partially blind in one eye
It’s a miracle only one person died
I wonder if the outcome would have been the same if it was a black driver and a white kid.
Fuck that police department. That is 1000% the fault of a car centric society.
The prosecutor who filed the charges and the judge who gave the charges the time of day are equally if not more evil than the police here.
If you’re so smart, maybe tell me where we should murder children, if not the street?
Gaza , Ukraine both seem popular places to kill kids.
Driveways also seem popular.
Okay but this is about americans killing *american kids, so gaza and ukraine seem terrible; they’re so far away!
Driveways are a great idea though. I hadnt considered that. You mightve just cracjed this whole thing wide open. Like…
Gaza seems to be an approved place to do it. At least by all the west that are still supplying the weapons to do it.
And, really, just brown children of the third world in general.
I’m curious what the speed limit of the road was. It blows my mind how fast we let cars drive in residential areas. The fact that these kids can’t walk 2 blocks safety between the grocery store and home-- or put another way, that if they don’t use the crosswalk between home and the grocery store, there’s a serious risk of death-- is such a failure of city planning and societal values.
Neither article mentions how far it would be had they used the crosswalk, but I’d guess, with a 4 lane road, for two kids it was really out of the way.
How heartbreaking. 7 years old. As a parent you can’t say, “yeah, you can walk two blocks home,”? Land of the free, but no autonomy for people without a car.
Speed limits don’t work. The crazy thing is how North America routinely builds roads that are far too wide even if they’re just two lanes. There is no reason why a two lane suburban road should be three lanes wide + street parking but that’s just how the place is setup. This isn’t a random theory, either, but a very well documented problem.
