  • Yeah, I was honest, I assume she was just one of those people who has never had to work long or unusual hours. A lot of people can’t wrap their heads around the fact that night shift workers need to sleep during the day, and that a few hours to hang out in the afternoon at the end of an 8h shift is very different to that same few hours before a 12h overnight.

That said, she was awful to deal with, so maybe she just didn’t care. All of the management was. My direct manager at one point was fired because his wife (definitely not a nepo hire) embezzled half a million over a few years.

  • I got chewed out for not going to a company bowling party once because I was working that night and asked for overtime if I went. I was doing security patrols which in that job meant 12-hour overnight shifts that were mostly driving, and I refused to lose 3 hours of sleep so I could go out before work. The HR lady or whatever she was couldn’t understand why I refused to go even though she so thoughtfully planned it outside of work hours. Oh, forgot to mention, she and the other admin people were on the clock of course, just not us night shifters.

  • I’ve barely read or listened to anything for over a year, now suddenly I have 9 books/audiobooks on the go. Most are things that everyone has read or heard about anyway, and almost all are part of a series Ive talked about too much over the years so I don’t have too much to say 🤷‍♂️

    Audio:
The Wise Man’s Fear by Pat Rothfuss when I’m jogging
Words of Radiance by Sanderson at work
Daughter of the Dragon by Michael G Manning at home

Books on rotation chapter by chapter:
    White Night by Jim Butcher
    River Marked by Patricia Briggs
The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie
The Hungry Isle by Emily Rodda
The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett

    Manga: Uzumaki by Junji Ito

I take absolutely no comfort in the fact that such an incompetent, stupid, harmful man has been made one of the most powerful people in the world. Twice.

Edit: Don’t get me wrong, if his “inevitable self-destruction” only affected himself that’d be one thing, but he’s done and is going to continue to do a lot of damage. We’ve got dumb cunt politicians over here in Australia who think he’s amazing and are trying to set up their own version of DOGE while government jobs are being destroyed daily. We’ve still got antivax protests flying Trump campaign flags, and I used to work security in a building with a local right-wing politician’s office who had a framed Trump flag on the wall. Trump, the people controlling him and the people enabling him are doing so much damage to everything that no, it’s no comfort at all.

  • I grabbed the app from github and jumped in, then looked through all of the posts on the front page with comments. Crypto, Musk bootlickers, one post has the n word in the title. So what exactly is this? Is it just going to be Voat again?

My interest is not in the Reddit interface so that’s not a selling point, and frankly the first impression of the users is bad. Is there a sub/community/whatever you can point me to that’s worth participating in yet or should I give it a few months and see how it progresses?

  • It was White version for me. I quit halfway through because of the story stuff and didn’t touch the series again until Sword was a few years old. The last straw was the 3rd or 4th time I got to a gym and the leader told me to go do plot crap with Team Villain before I could challenge for a badge. I don’t care and it’s not my job, I’m fuckin 10.

With Scarlet you can take hours getting to school while you collect everything in the first couple of areas, then after 20 minutes of plot you’re back in an almost completely open world (barring the post-game area). It’s the best it’s ever been if you’re just into collecting stuff.

  • I’m a few chapters into the Graphic Audio version of Words of Radiance by Sanderson, it’s pretty cool so far. There are a few voices that don’t fit the versions of characters in my head though, especially Jasnah. I’m sure I’ll get used to it.

I’ve also started Daughter of the Dragon by Michael G Manning which came out last year and somehow completely flew under my radar. It’s book 2 of Wrath of the Stormking, which is a sequel series to Art of the Adept, which I really liked. It’s much better than his Mageborn series & related continuations IMO, but those grew on me a lot over time.

Finally, I’ve switched from Goodreads (which I haven’t really used in the past 2 years anyway) to The StoryGraph. Not much to say about that yet, it seems to be fine.
