    I made a hole!

Well, technically the hole was already there and I just uncovered it. Now I have to work out what to do with a big hole in the floor of my wardrobe. It’s the old return air duct from long dead ducted heating, and it was a pain to pull out - it started off well with just undoing some screws, but one side was nailed down, then had the strip for the carpet nailed on top as well.

I’m thinking probably a piece of MDF and a carpet mat on top, and maybe something like corflute or thin plastic taped over the hole in the back wall, given it is not very visible (and the wall is masonite, not plaster). For now it just has the ugly space-stealing chipboard box cover back over the top of it to make sure Mr Woof does not use it as an excape route, but it would be nice to have that bit of space useable.

May as well do it properly - pull the grill and marine ply / masonite on the back section, put some cross braces from the underside and plonk a cut piece in the hole - you don’t want anything floating over a void, that’s how people fall in things.

As it is in a wardrobe no one should be falling into it, although it could potentially form the basis of a pit trap for the boogeyman.

Trying to brace and finish everything properly seems way more effort that it is worth, given both the lack of visibility and the generally poor state of the finish in the house in general. If I can find enough effort to do that sort of work I’ll start with filling the cracks in the walls from when the place was re-stumped a few years ago.

eh, two bits of wood fitting in the hole screwed in, hole mostly filled. Actually found this dude who’s kinda doing what I recommend until the wheels come off with the water putty yeah don’t’ do that bit. do about 1:53 - 3:07 ish. and it doesn’t have to be round. Also means you won’t have a step from the MDF on the floor.

Annoyed because I want to try actually watching the classic slashers for Halloween, if I’m not too much of a wuss that is. (I know bits because of cultural permutations and am curious but never actually watched them.)

But a lot of even the older movies and shows have been completely scrubbed from YouTube by DMCA. (It seems the full run of Buffy I watched over lockdown might be gone now.) There’s not much worth watching on Tubi, public TV is just a vehicle for ads even if I still had a telly, I don’t yarr and I am not getting a streaming service. Fuckem.

I genuinely miss video rentals. I used to get a bundle of 5 weekly videos for $10 and watch them while eating dinner.

Edit: Has anyone tried Plex? It says it’s free with ads and is legal. But does it make you sign up or download anything, and is it at all shady?

Kanopy is being discontinued due to the high cost to libraries. I never even did that… couldn’t be stuffed setting it up and my local libraries are difficult for me to get to in person

I’ve been a Plex user for yeeeeeeeears. It’s a legit app/service but you can feed it not-legit sources. I used Plex to organise and play downloaded torrented movies/tv shows until very recently. You can also hook up to other people’s Plex servers and play their less-than-legit content, usually for a fee, however I’ve never done that. There is some public domain type content available through Plex itself but I’ve never used it.

I now use Real-Debrid (costs moneys, I think it was something like $16 for 3 months) through an app called Streamio instead of downloading torrents. I used this guide to set it up. That’s for content which isn’t available on the streaming services I pay for, that is.

Stremio + Torrentio + real debrid makes it so easy and RD is honestly worth the money, can use it on desktop or on Firestick/Chromecast. The real debrid site might look shady but just use a throwaway email and even a prepaid visa/mastercard to pay for it as a once off - I’m confident it’s good enough to go security wise.

Easy explanation of debrid services here, melbaboutown. Anything you stream is a direct download through the RD servers not the torrent so it’s not like you can be nabbed from a list of seeds/peers

plex user here, it has some good free stuff, you can add your own stuff too. Not shady.

For some movies I buy cheap dvds from op shops, $1 or 2 each.

        Nice, thanks.

I was considering the op shop dvds. The usb cd/dvd writer I got ages ago doesn’t really work well but I have an old computer with a cd drive

That gives me 10 weeks to perfect potatoes in the air fryer, as I offered to do this for Christmas. I believe this will be achievable, but will have to do many test runs to make sure they are perfect. It is a sacrafice I am willing to make.

I was hoping for pakidge today, but sadly it’s not looking likely. The air will have to remain unfried for a bit longer. The rest of the week should be pakidge full however, as I’m expecting seven deliveries 😁

    Sigh. Rent went up.

I still haven’t chased refunds/credit for the expensive arse cat biscuits she can’t eat, and she’s inhaling the expensive tins like she’s got hollow legs.

Mourning the clothing that got ruined because the equivalent replacements now are such bad quality.

Also I’m wasting money/letting food go bad/getting by in less eco friendly ways because I’m constantly so damn tired. Just bone deep fatigue.

Even the once free entertainments now want their pound of flesh.

    Everything feels shitty and dystopian

it’s still free to go for walks in the park on a sunny day

( I also noticed that about food wastage, I read somewhere mexican has the lowest food wastage , I might try more of that )

Do I want to pull the trigger on this? I have no other ideas for what to do with myself over this time period and I really don’t want to end up sitting at home at my computer. I’ve never been on a P&O cruise but I have been on 2 cruises with the same itinerary, which is the South Pacific islands.

All booked! Sorted out my work leave, travel insurance, etc. Now just to figure out which, if any, drinks packages I want and arrange transport to and from Sydney.

I don’t really drink like I used to and for $99 a day I’m not sure I’ll get the use out of it. I do love to have a frozen pina colada on me at most times of the day on a cruise though…

Tempted to just get the $25 one and pay for booze as I go… but I dunno

        drinks packages

I’d do the $25 one - you can buy a few cocktails every day and still spend less, and you get coffee included, which for some reason is not in the $99 package. With the mocktails included I’m sure you can get a non-alcoholic pina colada to carry round and feel the part. For much less cost, less detriment to your health, and less likelihood of accidentally drinking too much to actuallly enjoy yourself.

    Here’s an unexpected myki issue.

When I was cruising down the bellarine the other day, jumped on the tram did my touching and it said the card was expired, the 3 dreaded beeps that the adults dressed like kids salivate over. Jumped off went to 7/11 grabbed a new card with $20 on no biggie.

I thought shit, that can’t be right as I just topped it up and it has $40 on it.

About to head back to melbs today and check the old ‘expired’ card on the website and it expires in Nov. 2024 with $40 pending.

The responsibility is obviously on the commuter to have a valid ticket. And I’m aware if a machine fails that’s on them but if the card hallucinates then where does that leave you if the big kids want their lunch monies?

Each card only lasts for 3 years (I think). You can take an expired card to Myki booth at Spencer St/Flinders St and they will transfer the balance to a sparkly new card for no dollars extra. If you had auto-top up set, then you’ll need to re-start that using the myki website.
Got caught this way myself a couple of times, cos I don’t lose my card.

Yea will have to swap it over. Just unfortunate it decided to expire itself 1yr before it was supposed to expire (according to the card account on the website, was only two years old).

Myki is such a pain in the arse. I wish they’d just kept the paper tickets and still let you buy them on the tram

I once got stood over, publicly talked down to and issued a fine all because their dumbshit scanner failed to function in the cold

My son’s just took a week for the balance to transfer from the expired card to the new one. We are not frequent public transport users and followed the whole process online for a replacement card etc.

I’m in the middle of doing this myself. Have received the new card, but having to wait 5 days for balance transfer is really annoying. What do people do if the inspectors get them? Lucky I have another card to use in the interim, but it’s not a great system

leaves you trying to challenge the cunce in court. But as thornburywitch said, just take it to the big dogs and say “Your fuckin’ problem now” and get them to transfer the balance to the new card.
