That and r/manga are really bad in that regard. I found an alright way to discover stuff to read is (aside from harassing friends/comrades for recommendations) to the MAL interest stacks page.
From time to time, someone with actual taste puts together a decent list, instead of just listing 20 horny romcoms.

i don’t think this specific series would be improved by being gay, but broadly speaking much of the horny bullshit on mangadex would be better, and 100% of them would make me (slightly) more tempted to read them

My exposure to awful culture mostly comes from a web fiction discord I’m on, which is like 1/3rd good, 1/3rd awful fanfics, and 1/3rd power progression trash.
Incidentally, this also describes the basic plot of Goethe’s Faust, a classic of Western literature which also features a man getting sidetracked from his intellectual pursuits by chasing underage women.
I sometimes wonder why I’ve lost interest in nearly all Japanese manga and have switched over to Korean manhwa with a light dabbling of Chinese manhua, and this post reminded me of how
manga tends to be.
