this is so disappointing

This corporate bullshit is so difficult to read. I hate it.
It’s always America, too. Microsoft’s must be the most profoundly unsettling.
So like, which fork is good?

mull on mobile (f-droid repository) and librewolf on Linux/Windows
saving this for later. huge
I’ve been using Zen
I’m using Floorp which is either a more feature rich or more cluttered fork similar to Zen, depending on how you wanna look at it.
Who I’m imagining came up with the name Floorp.
It’s perfect lol. I fucking hate the name. I’m keeping an eye on Zen and have it installed and will consider moving over to it after some more development happens, and it’s mostly just because I can’t fucking tell people “Yearh, I use Floorp” without dying a bit on the inside each time.
And also the Discord fork I use is called fucking “Goofcord”. Like come on.
Sometimes I think about making the web browser from my conworld real just because the name slaps a lot harder than something like “Floorp”, but then I remember that the name only really slaps if you have the cultural and linguistic background of a country that literally doesn’t exist
I don’t do any world building or anything but I can imagine. Ok I did start a world building thing about a dystopian cyberpunk version of LA until I realized that was super played out and then lost interest in the story I was writing because the trans allegory was a bit too on the nose.
@[email protected] bit.
Floorp is now an alien-themed browser. I don’t make the rules.
It’s so gleeby deeby
It’s Japanese, that might be why
I have heard good things about Floorp. I have been trying it myself. It has workspaces, which is a very important tool for me.
Unfortunately, it does seem to be suffering from performance issues, which appears to be a recent thing. Hopefully, that does get solved.
Oh, hey, Floorp just did a very cool thing of closing all my tabs and deleting all my workspaces with no apparent way of recovery (no, there is no relevant window in ‘recently closed windows’).
I guess, I will need to manually recover the entire setup of several hundred tabs.
I’m enjoying Librewolf. It has built-in container tabs!

Welp,
Everything on the Internet has to choose between forcing users to watch shitty ads, or selling white labeled shit from alibaba 😮💨
Shitty video ads where some “personality” pretends to be really excited about some white labeled shit from alibaba
I tried to read the blog post but doublespeak and marketing crap gives me an insta-migraine so I checked Reddit.
Mozilla now doubling down on ads in Firefox
Did whoever wrote that pile of marketing gibberish actually say a goddamned thing?
Oh, they said something. They said they believe it’s right and proper for advertisers to intrude into our lives and steal our time and attention, and they’re going to help them do that while claiming to be the “good guys” by inventing some nonsense that “protects privacy” a little more. Never mind that everyone’s main objection to ads isn’t that they compromise our privacy; we object to ads because they intrude on our experience, waste our time and disrupt our ability to focus on the content we seek.
The obvious corollary to this is that ad blockers will eventually be crippled, just like on Chrome, no doubt with the same “security” excuse.
From another thread
“Advertising funded search engines will be inherently biased towards the advertisers and away from the needs of consumers” - founders of Google in 1998.
But the siren song of money always wins.

Scratching one more company off the very very short list of software corps I think I could work at without experiencing total self-loathing
This is good for GNOME Web
Neat of them to remove the onereason I use Firefox.
Will try out librewolf or, sadly, go back to chromium forks.
I guess it’s time to move to another browser very soon.
there are no other browsers. there are forks of firefox yeah but they ultimately rely on upstream code and if this causes people to flee from firefox mozilla will collapse*. there’s a couple of independent browsers that are progressing but they are still in very early stages of development and I’m sure it will be many years before either of them is ready for mainstream use
edit: *if google is forced to stop paying them as part of the anti-trust lawsuit
yep, we’re down to two whole browser engines. they’ve made the web so mind-bogglingly complex, it’s prohibitively expensive to write and maintain one.
i dont think there’s corporate profit in it either, not with google owning the space. so basically, we’re only going to get a better browser if china builds it :D
maybe we’ll get lucky and mozilla devs will feel a sense of camraderie and will start heavily contributing to the independent engines but I think that is very unlikely though lol
eh…
I guess we’ve got to hope that the LadyBird project succeeds and we get a usable browser sometime before 2030 https://ladybird.org/
I really do hope ladybird can do something substantial, but even the most optimistic outcome is maybe half a decade away. I really do hope the techno wizards of the net do something about meaningful alternative browsers and do it soon
Does China maintain one?
No(?) but I had a quick search and they have a chromium based browser called Twinkstar, so there’s that.
Twinkstar
According to Natopedia, Opera Browser is Chinese owned now.
“As of the end of 2023, Opera Software was 72.4% owned by Kunlun, a Chinese public company, making it a subsidiary of that company. Opera CEO James Yahui Zhou is a controlling shareholder in Kunlun.”
~ Opera (web browser) - WikipediaI think it’s Chromium based, just like the Russian Yandex Browser
I think it’s Chromium based
It is. I was (mistakenly) referring to the question of Chinese browsers and saw the R*ddit peanut gallery
about Opera being owned by the “SeeSeePee” and looked it up.
i dont think so i assume at best they maintain their own forks of firefox or chrome. I’m certainly not an expert on their tech though so i suppose it’s always possible they do
@[email protected] you might know is there an indigenous browser engine in china?
sorry, theyre all chrome forks
yeah that’s what i figured lmao
This is so depressing…
yeah… I assume this is them signaling their plans for if they lose that google default search engine money (which is likely I guess?)
