They picked that riding for a reason. The Cons got 81.8% of the vote in the recent election in that riding.

I wish we had the requirement that you must LIVE in the riding you’re running for and have lived there the past 2 years at least. Should also have to live there the entire time in office as well.

Hilarious that a bunch of Albertans that hate Ottawa politicians are about to vote in an Ottawa politician.

        Perfectly on brand, tbh.

They love freedom, but not for trans or gays.

They love their country, but they hate paying the taxes to support it.

They love democracy, but they hate when anybody else wins.

They hate tyranny, but they love to back traitors.

Maybe shame the libertarians in that riding into presenting an independent candidate that would defeat Peter Rabbithair easily.

The last thing I would change is you only get paid the median wage of the people who you represent.

That’s actually a decent idea. Imagine if Trump’s income was capped at $66k/year, the US median income. He might actually give a shit about income inequality and raising the minimum wage.

It’s an Alberta riding that went 82% Conservative in the last election. It’s highly unlikely.

    Voters rejected PP.

It seems like this other Conservative isn’t confident in their own ability to act as an MP. And it doesn’t look good to give your seat up to a loser.

It also shows to the people in the riding that they don’t matter … the position is just to get a politician into power not to represent actual people.

@Showroom7561 @ininewcrow Based regardless of the political party.

You know I find the nominal political viewpoints of conservatives(small c) just. Not exactly my cup of tea but like supporting armed gay married couples with a marihuana growing business while having a long term view towards a responasible budget is an entirely valid and respectable #policy position to have.

The brain melting Hybrid civil war they are waging on the other hand…

Not just in #Canada but across #Europe and the entire #West. Well what passes for The West now a days anyway.

In theory, nothing. In practice, half as much of what’s wrong with conservatism. But I was referring to “enlightened centrism” is more specific: the tendency to position oneself in the middle of two ‘extremes’ because it’s a comfortable position, to play a role of enlightened by always taking a both-sides stance. That’s what I’m referring to as a fantasy, because we know that in practice, for the core issues of politics, almost always there is a wrong side of history stance.

Yeah, things like “responsible budget” are always just a lie.

It’s not worth acknowledging the “good points” when they only seem to use them as a smoke screen and a distraction.

If you want to embrace the ideals that they willfully abandon at every opportunity, maybe just find a new name for that set of ideals.

“The Conservatives handily won that riding on Monday with nearly 82 per cent of the vote.”

They picked one of the safest ridings in the country so that there’s no chance of that happening.

I assume he’s being paid off by the Conservative party somehow. Otherwise he just spent a lot of time and money to get re-elected and is now unemployed.

Absenteeism in the Catholic Church was a major factor in the Protestant Reformation. There will come a time in any system that allows it where it is violently reminded why a disconnect between representative and the population they are supposed to serve is a bad idea.

You can sell it as their chance to be represented in the government. Beyond the practical benefits, people like to be on the winning team.

It’s never going to make up the difference here, but it would be funny just to see him to worse than the other guy.

Can’t start today. Not until the byelection is called. Carney doesn’t have to call one for 6 months. And why should he? The voters there don’t want another election so soon. They just voted someone who abandoned their post!

All the people that thought Poilievre would not continue as the opposition leader need a wake up call. You still don’t understand what you’re fighting against. Cult of personality is a major pillar of fascism, and loyalty (to the leader, not to the country) is the most valuable trait. Poilievre had a few humiliating defeats but he’s still gaining grounds for the CPC, and the conservative wave is still on it sway, bolder and with lots of resentments piled up.

Take this seriously. The enemy doesn’t have to be smart or competent, they just need to amass power. https://www.antihate.ca/40ways

I didn’t expect him to voluntarily step down.

I expect the party to follow it’s own damn rules and have the leadership review that their party rules requires after a losing election.

Of course, they could still do that after he inevitably wins in one of the safest seats in the country.

What kind of calculus do you think the liberal party has done just now…. Let loser Polievre come back to show himself to be more of an obstructionist loser that he continues to be??? He’s going to block Carney’s agenda again just like they did during the last house sitting. Also Scheer is an absolute thumb head. Polievre is a coward and a hypocrite.

Carney’s response to the byelection question was basicailly “He can have his byelection if he wants. I’m too busy with more important things to waste time with silly partisan games”

Which makes sense. No need to hand the conservatives a "see the liberals are blocking democracy’ talking point.

Except everyone knows the cons will obstruct everything and blockade the work of parliament and committee work - that is who they are. I am really curious to see how the liberals under Carney combat that sort of filibustering that cons did for the past few years.
