Not reporting it can get you a pretty hefty fine. And even if you do report it there are specific challenges regarding storing the evidence and what data you must collect and it’s all a gigantic mess.

The fact that there is even one instance that are willing to go through all this is more than I expected.

Wayland very good on AMD and Intel these days. Nvidia was unsupported, but last year nVidia made a business decision to support EGL(?) so with fresh drives work has begun in Gnome and KDE to support Nvidia in Wayland. I’m not sure how mature Nvidia on Wayland is yet

Clarification: GBM is what Intel, AMD and the general “nice players” of the Linux graphics ecosystem decided, whereas EGLStreams was something NVidia came up with because it worked better with their proprietary drivers (AFAIK)

Gnome and KDE were fine going out of their way to support both, but smaller implementations such as wlroots (the thing behind sway and Hyprland and other non-Weston “window managers”) didn’t feel the tradeoff was worth it (in both philosophical and manpower reasons) and stuck to GBM.

NVidia comparatively recently “caved in” and got GBM support working (alongside kernel mode setting & other terms you don’t really need to know about), and being one of the few proprietary players in the ecosystem they have not been able to benefit from help from the community, which is one of the reasons why their Wayland support is immature compared to the likes of Intel and AMD.

That’s the point! That’s the whole point! There are no other tools built yet It IS an incredibly crude moderation tool, because the alternatives are being worked on as we speak

On the software side, we already have PeerTube. It’s just the logistics of hosting video are way too expensive for most people to be able to cover:

• You need drives to store all those videos, preferably in several quality and codec variants so everyone can watch them.
• You need the bandwidth to serve all those videos. PeerTube can “smooth over” the initial new upload bump by using WebTorrents, which is the least worst solution if you quietly ignore all the “but muh IP address” people, but once people stop watching at the same time, you’re back to square one.
• Transcoding requires powerful and specialized hardware. Nobody in their right mind will serve videos the same way they’re uploaded, especially with the rise of new codecs like VP9 or god forbid AV1, which you simply can’t encode on a consumer CPU unless you’re fine waiting hours/days for a single upload to go through.

My instance seems to be able to access yours. I assume it’s just the general Reddit migration straining the big servers. I know .world is struggling pretty heavily right now.

To some people having any moderation beyond “just block the trolls yourself lmao” means creating an echo chamber.

There are instances that disable downvotes. https://github.com/maltfield/awesome-lemmy-instances has a field saying if an instance has them enabled or not.

I read Haiku (OS) has no future recently and I think a similar thing is happening here.

Do we want to “have a future” or do we just want to be a cool place doing cool shit for ourselves?

Lemmy the software publishes all (de)federations of an instance at the /instances endpoint

For example, Beehaw’s (de)federations are at https://beehaw.org/instances
and my own single-user instance has them at https://lemmy.w.on-t.work/instances (which is slightly different as I run Lemmy 0.18)

If you are looking for the reverse of this, there is a tool that shows that information, but the creators of it are suspicious to say the least (as in, will openly associate with KF kinda suspicious)

Honestly I’d probably host my own Matrix if Conduit wasn’t still so behind on stuff. Like, I think they still don’t support spaces properly, right?

Even Dendrite feels far too heavy and that’s intended to be the “light” option compared to Synapse, which needs an entire server onto itself to have any kind of speed behind it.

There’s plenty of 0.17.4 instances that, despite other bugs, have no problem sending and receiving updates from other instances.

It’s probably because of the absolute scale of dot world. This is what happens when you try to centralize ActivityPub, especially an implementation like Lemmy which did not previously have any of the scaling challenges the likes of Mastodon had before.

Everyone should’ve told people to pick different instances (there are STILL new guides written where step 1 is to “just register on dot world” [or shitjustworks, which isn’t any better, really]) and admin should’ve locked registrations after 10-15k, maybe 20k users MAX, yet y’all got too greedy. Good fucking luck dealing with the aftermath.
