That’s weird - Ive not had that issue but I have to say I am often a bit lazy and don’t check. If it’s not lining up it suggests the download was corrupted. I guess you have tried the download more then once?

If you tell em which distro I would be happy to go through the steps and download and share what I did in case there’s something you are doing wrong (not suggesting there is - I don’t know how much of a computer person you are). But I am travelling so can’t do it this week because I dont want to be downloading over mobile hotspot.

Thanks for the offer! I’ve managed to create bootable installations and install them before, and run simple commands, but tended to skip this step. It’s not a problem with directions either, I faithfully followed the verification guide which worked. The numbers just don’t match.

It may genuinely be an issue with the isos as someone else who got as far as installation is talking about corrupted files. https://www.linux.org/threads/linux-mint-cinnamon-22-1-and-virtualbox.56035/

The distribution I was downloading was Cinnamon 22.1 but I’m wondering if I should try Ubuntu

I’ve only skimmed the first few posts but adding it here so I don’t lose it

Yeah that sounds like it might just be a dodgy download. It’s been a while since I played around with other distros (I am old and can’t be bothered and run Ubuntu now) but mint used to be my go to for older machines. It’s lighter then ubuntu
