I often see the sentiment that YouTube and adblockers will be forever locked in a cat-and-mouse game. However, for many years now, Twitch has entirely eliminated adblocking on desktop web.
What is stopping YouTube from replicating Twitch’s advertising strategy of embedding ads directly into their videos?
honestly gave up on it months ago. youtube premium is well worth it if only not to deal with the aggravation
i never really ad blocked on youtube (as annoying as they were), so nothing would have really changed for me… however, i do use umatrix to block all JS and other content by default and selectively allow only minimal parts of a site required for its operation
since the introduction of the “ad block detection” bs, youtube has been complaining at me and not letting me watch videos
i then searched for alternatives, found invidious, and now i dont see youtube ads
fuck you google
I only ever had it bug me about this once with ublock on as it’s always been and I thought it was going to be some kind of several warnings then refusing to work thing and I’d have to follow some specific steps to restore functionality of the site with adblock on but it seems to have fixed itself because it just doesn’t hassle me about it ever now and I didn’t do a thing.
well, i’m not about to go back now that i have an ad-free experience… it was apathy and laziness that kept me there, and now invidious is a much better way to consume the content
i don’t use sponsorblock, so creators can monetise me (ie i can “pay” for the content) that way and google won’t see a cent or be able to farm my data (well, i’m sure they can but probably not as well)
You are collateral damage that has now been forced to pick a side. Google’s ham fisted approach backfired.
If it was a few bucks a month, sure. $14 a month? LOL no. Google’s one of the richest companies in the world, they don’t need the money, much less that much money. It’s just greed, pure and simple.
I just got an email today that they’re raising the price to 13€ here in Germany starting December. I think I’ll pass and go the pirate way again. That aggressive behaviour against adblockers while also raising the prices feels like a scummy move.
I literally just block it with Ublock Origin and Adguard as firefox extensions. Not even a VPN or anything. Only for, like a week did I get some popups telling me that Youtube didn’t allow adblockers. I then closed those popups, and everything went as normal, no ads or anything. Those popups are already gone
So yeah, try that. Save yourself from giving 15 bucks a month to one of the biggest goddamned corporations on the planet. It’s not like that money was gonna go to better pay their employees anyway
Yep, if you see the popups just refresh your filter lists and restart. Longest I’ve had to wait is about an hour for a fix, and that was a while back. Fixes seem to be coming much faster now as more people are watching this.
It’s not even available in many countries. Even if it were, the price is steep especially in third world economies. It’s probably not that big of deal for many in the US but most people in third world countries would find it so hard to squeeze it into their budget.
I also gave up on it months ago. Youtube just isn’t worth it to deal with the aggravation so I just stopped watching it.
