it sounds like you never used it right. everything that exists on usenet or torrents can be found on irc.
I get all my TV and movies from dcc
A lot of anime groups offer their releases through irc and torrent

Horriblesubs was the biggest for a long time, but they closed shop recently. Subsplease.org would now be a good one, they even share the same irc archive as Horriblesubs so you can still access their releases.
They release torrents in the public trackers anyway. So I’m not really missing out on anything from them.
It’s available without having to rely on seeders. Which is often an issue with older series
I use it to get support for FOSS software
