“Yes I want to be part of a proletarian mass movement but liking sports is normie boring low-IQ primate brain behavior” -statements dreamt up by the utterly deranged
I’d rather not have a flag-humping military-worshiping head-injuries-are-basically-expected with consequently-lifelong-behavioral-problems-and-domestic-violence-from-participants side of sports, or at least one minimized as much as possible no matter how much such damaging spectacles excite the hogs conditioned to expect them.
Even so, I may as well tap the sign considering how this already predictably went:
it seems like a lot of comments here are implicitly talking about US football but there are a lot of other sports out there, people generally don’t care whether you’re into their sport as long as you’re into some sport
I think they’d just mock you if you’re into curling or, like, badminton
Badminton was literally the only sport I enjoyed as a teenager and would be willing to try playing again today
Hitting floaty objects with a racket is fun.
rn at my work they are selling these led light up badminton sets and I kinda wanna buy one. I used to play it at my grandparents house as a kid and I remember it being quite fun and playing it in the dark with removed bits while high as fuck would be awesome.
The Robin Hood Disney movie made badminton look fun.
I don’t know if this is true at a high level, but I think for someone just picking up a racket, it’s a lot easier to play than something like tennis. The birdie really does float unless someone spikes it at you, so you have a lot of time to react to what’s happening and someone more advanced can pretty easily tailor their play to a newcomer.
people generally don’t care whether you’re into their sport as long as you’re into some sport
That’s not any better.
I don’t hate sports, but i hate a lot of the cultural brainworms around sports. I’m not sure if they’re as bad as they were when i was a kid, but they used to be awful. One of those is the expectation that if you were born male you MUST care about sports. You MUST be able to have a conversation about THE GAME. Obviously these things are deeply rooted in the enforcement of patriarchy. Patriarchy is the actual problem and the thing i hate, but you can’t ignore how sports (at least in the US - your country may vary) plays a role in that. That doesn’t nake sports inherently bad - they aren’t. But the status of sports as “this is the good and normal thing to like - and you must like one of them to be normal” is fucked
everyone on this site seems to struggle with irl social interaction and let me tell you being able to do basic sports talk is like playing the socialization game on easy mode
everyone on this site seems to struggle with irl social interaction
Yeah the site has a sizable neurodiverse community and we have spent all our lives being made to justify to others why we don’t just “be normal.”
I’m on the spectrum, the spectrum isn’t aligned against sports except under some archaic jock/nerd viewpoint. I know of at least a few big athletes that are out about being on the spectrum. Lots of special interest material to be found. Many sports, especially rock climbing & BJJ, that pair very well with neuroatypical makeup due to the huge depth of techniques to be learned.
Okay but what if sports aren’t one of my special interests
I mean I enjoyed parkour back when I was in the right environment for it but the average prole I’m meant to appeal to probably doesn’t know or care much about parkour
I would say that is fine, and was the case for me for a long time too, but don’t foreclose yourself to the idea that it could be one of your interests in the future.
You are right. But like, ‘learning to do sportstalk’ to help with ‘socialization’ (especially at work) doesn’t make me like sports. If anything, I kinda makes me think its dumber.
But yeah, sports, beers/alcohol, guns, hunting, all classic ‘guy talk’ I’m decently good at, despite none being things I’m really into.
everyone on this site seems to struggle with irl social interaction
That’s pretty presumptive of you, and even if it wasn’t, it sounds a bit like concern trolling and that’s not cool. What must be done to be “normal” and why must it typically involve marginalizing marginalized people further, if not outright self-harm?
I submit that if you ever meet somebody from the global south or any kind of actually proletarian class, the singular thing it would be possible to talk to & bond with them over, if language is shared, is sports.
everyone on this site seems to struggle with irl social interaction
I don’t struggle with that. The idea that people who aren’t into sports are socially awkward is yet another toxic trope.
Me: the expectation to do sports talk is a toxic cultural expectation of the patriarchy to enforce gender role confirmity.
You: just do basic sports talk bro, it’ll be easier for you
people generally don’t care whether you’re into their sport as long as you’re into some sport
I still find that attitude kind of toxic, but only roughly as toxic as le enlightened Redditors looking down their noses at sportsball while going bazinga for e-sports, which in some ways have become just an accelerated version of the most toxic fandom aspects of non-e-sports.
Sports are fine, and should even be encouraged, but for fuck’s sake must they be concussionball with flag-humping characteristics?
Sports are fine, and should even be encouraged, but for fuck’s sake must they be concussionball with flag-humping characteristics?
No they don’t need to be US football which should clearly be abolished but folks in this thread hyperfixating on how lame American football is are kinda missing the point.
I’d prefer the greater point to be the gambling and hypermonetization characteristics of Burgerland sports culture do the most public harm of all, even moreso than the head injuries of full-contact sports.
There is nothing wrong with liking sports, sports are cool and fun and can be healthy social events. For someone who is a casual sporting event enjoyer, sportsball discourse is kinda rude and minimizing of their interest.
There is a lot wrong with defining your entire identity around sports and acting like a child throwing a temper tantrum when others don’t also base their entire identity around sports. It is for those people that sportsball discourse is not only suggested, it is mandatory, because those people should be shamed into doing something useful with their lives. This is doubly true for people who base their entire identity around some specific subset of sports and who reject any sport outside of that subset. If smacking ball with stick across grass can be a sport then pretty much anything can be a sport.
Yea it’s seems like an obvious statement but people dont generally have a problem with people liking sports, they have a problem with people who cannot healthily moderate their emotions.
Obviously there’s some of the pretentious holier than though types but they’re literally just on reddit from everything I’ve seen and reddit says downhill skiing is irresponsible and selfish because it’s too dangerous and they do t understand how it could be enjoyable.
downhill skiing is irresponsible and selfish because it’s too dangerous
Yes, driving to a mountain is incredibly dangerous and that’s why the ski train must be seized by the workers
My town literally just celebrated the 100 year anniversary of the snow train that bought tourists to town that kicked off skiing in the area.
They’d get off the train and locals would charge a nickel to drive them to the top of the mountain and it would take them all day to ski back to town.
I take it there’s no snow train anymore and it’s a hell of f150 traffic up dubious roads to the mountain now
everyone’s always “media literacy is ruining tv” and never “media literacy is ruining sports fandom” even though both are true.
yeah it’s one of the most annoying things I still see on here from time to time. thankfully it’s mostly passé these days. passionately hating sports is way more tedious a personality trait than loving them, just keep it to yourself tbh.
“Yes I want to be part of a proletarian mass movement but liking sports is normie boring low-IQ primate brain behavior” -statements dreamt up by the utterly deranged
Yes the words you dreamt up and put in other people’s mouths are deranged. The idea that you MUST like and be able to converse about sports in order to - not just be “normal” - but be part of proletarian struggle that’s also utterly deranged

Yes because the proletariat can only talk about sports. If you don’t you’re obvioudly some sort of bougie fuck.
WTF is this?

Sports have degenerated into gambling though, the masses are being addicted and bled dry by algorithms. Not to mention the already horrible alcoholism.
Sports aren’t inherently bad, but under capitalism they certainly are.
that’s a good point in the past few years the gambling has sapped a lot of fun out of it. can’t even talk about sports online without some punter moaning about how their parlay didn’t hit.
Oh is it time for our biannual relitigation of this struggle session already?
yes
Wouldn’t be Hexbear without it
I think last time we settled on “It’s okay not to like sports, just don’t be a weird jerk about it”
That’s my position, hope we win this year! If we don’t I’m gonna set a car on fire
only if it’s a cop car
If we don’t I’m gonna set a car on fire
I thought the setting cars on fire thing was when the favored team won.
I’m gonna get blasted on grain alcohol and do it either way
No, that’s just the natural state of Eagles fans. They just do that sometimes.
if you like sports, you do you. idc.
that said, it does turn many people into goliras, no not the ball part, the competition part.
there should be a study comparing monke
behavior with e-‘sports’ vs traditional sports.
you’re at your job where you want to build a union and your coworker asks you “did you catch the game last night?” what is your reply
Smart play “No, I missed it, who won?”
Yeah, i have been around people who like sports all my life and this is the go-to. Let’s them talk about the game, and gets me up to speed of a game I honestly don’t really care about, but that it’s nice that gets people excited about.
“i dont watch sports”.
“oh okay” (proceeds to not attempt to start further conversations with you)
I mean, that would be an extremely maladjusted behavior on the coworker’s part. It’s not like I write off the possibility of befriending or even talking to someone because they don’t consume my slop.
yea ill let others handle the talking. i rarely talk irl anyways.
You’ve actually just pointed out one of the worst things about sports in the US
a lot of people are more socially inept than you think and don’t have many conversation starters
maybe if they did something besides watch sports.
sorry that prole hobbies aren’t interesting enough for you
THE GAME being the patriarchy approved “normal” topic that ALL MALES MUST be able to have a conversation about in order to be socially acceptable is toxic as fuck. The way your turning it around to say poor smol bean hegemonic culture enjoyers don’t know what else to talk about is kind of true, but that doesn’t make it any better. If anything its another example of how patriarchy hurts men as much as women.
Just to be clear, the problem isn’t sports but patriarchy. This may be less of an issue outside the US. Hopefully its not as bad in the US as was, but i doubt it
What is the way out of your conundrum? How can people talk about sports?
If the price of building socialism is having to pretend to like sports for the rest of my life then I’ll just have to resign myself to capitalist hellworld
nah come over and watch the fights with me some day we’ll have a great time
“what is Wenger thinking putting Walcott on this late”
Never been asked that by a co-worker
“I would like to watch grown men play catch while destroying their bodies with poison and scrambling their brains with concussions, and I would further like to make being violently passionate about one arbitrary brand name my entire identity. This is what is mainstream and the most socially acceptable sort of hobby: passively consuming this content at a rate of 30 seconds of gameplay per hour of ads, while drinking heavily.”
Sports fandom is just twitch streamer stan culture except somehow even more toxic and harmful for everyone involved.
Reducing all sports fans to rabid Ameribrain “football” stans is pretty reductive, this is a silly take.
All existing socialist states highly prize(d) athletic achievement and watching sports with friends is a great way to bond socially, so as to put the social in socialism
They cultivated sports, not advertising models owned by the most racist bourgeois fucks in the country.
fair enough, sports gambling and ads (which are usually just for sports gambling these days) do weigh heavily on enjoyment
Stereotyping is also toxic.
Watching sports is a fun thing to do with your friends.
Okay I am locking this, it has devolved into both sides of this argument just talking past each other and heading into hostile territory.
Learn to play nice online all of you.
Sports gambling is utterly fucking ruinous and has already shattered quite a few families and warped the sports themselves into betting outlets, even in their televised presentations. That shit should be abolished in any society that actually cares about its citizenry.
“Dae le sportsball bad amirite” Redditors are generally fine with gambling because their internet funny money is already a gamble.
This is why I stick to Snooker.
the dark bar vibe & way snooker people dress cracks me up
It’s aight. Watching high doesn’t make it better and watching it alone sucks cause all the ad breaks
I played a lot of sports though, and you can even go solo to a pick up game
Do the terminally online actually get mad at people for liking sportsball?
