Just got a full refund on something I disputed via PayPal, with no request for the return of the item in question. I guess it’s mine to deal with now? Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing. Slight increase in hassle, but also the chance to sell and get some benefit from the hassle. So I guess that counts as a win.

I bought some cheap ass ball winders for yarn and I got a partial refund I think and they sent one out (because they kept breaking on me) and I didn’t need to send it back or anything.

I ended up throwing them out because… What was I going to do with them.

At least this has value so can be sold - I’ll probably wait a bit to check if they follow up for a return, but they have just refunded the money through PayPal without requesting return first. I suspect they want to just close off the whole thing and pretend it never happened, as it is an electical item that came with a 15amp plug (info said 10 amp) and their first offer was to refund me $35 to have another plug put on. I pointed out that would be illegal/unsafe and got a full refund with no further comment.

Yeah they probably just want it over and done with. At least you can sell it, so you get more bang for your buck!

If anyone that uses instagram needs a smile today, I suggest checking out the account deputy_dog_radar - it’s a US cop and his belgian malinois sharing a snack once a day and the dog is just so cute.

    My dinner

Image of an oval plate with a serving of fried rice and sauteed mushrooms in a Vegemite jus.

It was delicious. I even Julie Andrewed the carrots which I never do. Usually I go bugger it they’re getting grated.

This is mostly for my ADHD-havers, but non-ADHD folks can pipe up if they like. Do y’all find cooking hard? Like I feel like it takes me 2 hours just to cook a 35 minute meal. Now that I’m working I don’t really have time to prep ahead. But I’m tempted to do it on the weekend when I can because this is infuriating.

I just wish my boss wouldn’t keep me back until 5:20 to do my “daily progress”. I think now I’m gonna have to ask him at 4:50 instead of 4:55 because he just … talks, a lot. And this is coming from someone who talks a lot (if y’all haven’t noticed).

It started out hard, then got easier with experience, but became hard again over the last 18 months as I became increasingly burnt out and sapped of energy (not to mention my appetite dropped a lot).

Frozen veg is a lifesaver. Tinned beans, as well as any premade stir fry sauces (which you can make once at home). Ginger garlic paste as mentioned in yesterday’s thread. Makes all the difference between “ugh what a fiddly job this will take forever” to “okay I can do this quick” and actually getting into a flow.

An air fryer has hugely expanded options as I don’t like using an oven (fiddly, takes too long to heat up) but it makes cooking a frozen crumbed fish or whatever a nice quick meal.

But yeah, the biggest thing that has helped my whole life is meal prep/bulk cooking. Fuck weekday cooking (usually). Whenever I do have the energy I’ll power through and make enough to last a while, freeze anything I can’t eat in the week, and thank myself when cooking is hard but there’s something ready to go. When I’m tired or can’t concentrate I don’t mind eating the same thing for days on end.

(Anything that can be eaten with rice is much more versatile and worth cooking in bulk and freezing - mainly if you use a rice cooker.)

Microwave pouches are not as good as freshly cooked, but if you can’t be arsed getting out the rice cooker, then they fill a need. Ready in 90 secs/2 mins if you want the rice really soft. One pouch does one person with some sauce & veg & sardines/herring on top. The Aldi coconut, chilli & lime one is quite nice. Also their basic basmati and basic jasmine rice. I’m not a fan of the egg fried rice one - edible but not delicious. Good cupboard standby.

Yeah I meant fresh rice with defrosted/reheated sides. Not a fan of any other rice myself, but it’s the most versatile carb imo.

Yeah I do all that, it’s just, I don’t know. It’s hard. It’s also hard with chronic pain. I just feel so… iunno, I can never finish dinner at a normal time, like I just finished making dinner now at 8:30.

Yeah, sometimes there’s no way around it, I’ll often finish cooking at like 10pm and feel exhausted. Which is why if I’m going to cook I’ll make at least 3 meals out of it so it’s worth it. And I don’t do any other chores for that day

It takes a long time to become proficient at cooking, like at least ten years , so don’t stress, accept you’re on a learning curve

during the week cook easy stuff you know, try new recipes on the weekend

Even recipes I know take me forever. Currently cooking a Japanese curry that I’ve cooked countless times, still takes me 50million years to cook it. Seriously, I started at 6:30 and it’s almost 8.

It’s usually the chopping. You don’t have to be precise, you don’t have to cut tiny pieces. Use frozen cut vegies for speed. 👍

I can hyperfixate and cook all afternoon, but then I make a lot of food to last me days. Otherwise, I keep things boring and simple.

I agree with @[email protected] quick meals during the week. Pick up some pre-packed salads or frozen mix veg. Pair them with a protein or roast vegetables. Keep it simple. On the weekend spend time making more elaborate meals in larger quantities and freeze some.

It can take a while, especially when you are trying new things. I do pre-prepare a lot of things, but not all the sort of all-in-on batch cooking on the weekend. More cutting up vegies for a few days in advance. I do also make things like stews in larger quanties when I am making them so I often just have to prepare side dishes and not the full meal.

I plan meals in advance and have a basic template I follow so I don’t have to start from scratch - nothing fancy, for example lunches are basically a repeat of toastie, sandwich, soup, sandwich & I just have to work out which specific type for each day. I write it on a whiteboard on my kitchen wall, which is directly in front of where I do food preparation. So I don’t have to remember what is coming up & what I need to do, it is right in front of me. Then for example if I am cutting up a salad to go with dinner, I will look at the board and see I have two more salads planned in future, so I will get out two containers plus the plate for dinner, and fill them all at the same time.

Woolies came through on the heavily discounted items today. 58c for probiotic yoghurt four packs x2. These average af pizza sub things for 80c x2. 200g Pepperoni 60c. Quinoia salad 60c. I seem to drink vegemite so I’m trying mighty mite and it’s runnier but tasty and about half the price. Half price muesli bars for work snacks x2. Plus 2l soy and 2 packets of corn cakes all for $26. It was a heavy bag for that money for once.

New job is pretty good actually. I applied for jobseeeker also which will top up the work money deficit and grant me a wonderful health care card. I resigned from my last job but because I already had a new casual job it might be I only have to wait two weeks for the top ups. Will be a nail biting couple of weeks. It’s a drama being on jobseeker but I can handle. Anything to be able to leave work at work and not spend every weekday thinking about what a bunch of cunts I was working with. Only walked 8.5ks today, but that’s ok. Good mental health, sobriety and living my truth are worth the frugaility. It’s humbling having to really budget to make ends meet. It’ll get old but I need this year to recover.

Aah another Mighty Mite fan! My elder minipeeler likes it because it’s just not quite as full on as Vegemite and is a helluva lot easier to spread evenly (for a child making their own sandwich with very soft fresh bread this is a bonus). Health care cards are awesome for the concessions. I’m glad your new job is a much better fit for you. We potentially spend so much of our lives at work and life’s too short to be spending it with jerks, even for a modicum of financial security. And good on you for scoring some grocery bargains! I’ve been cruising by my local supermarkets at a certain time of day and have managed to nab some cheap fruit and veges this way. Especially handy when it’s stuff that’s normally a bit expensive like Brussels sprouts and snow peas.

My new boss is a bit of an angel. To see her and the most senior staffer consider a new job and really take employee’s life balance into account was really nice. To consider staff’s personal life vs how and where they work was another one. Fuck. Some employers aren’t ruthless KPI chasing capitalists after all. I have to look for other work for centrelink, but I don’t want to honestly.

Mighty might is good. A bit more promite tasting. Enjoying. The pepperoni is vegan fake meat stuff, which was a nice relief to discover. I was supposed to never eat pig again and now I don’t have to break my rule cos I also think it’s silly to waste food over and above animal rights beliefs.

That is pretty funny! Reminds me of an ultra straight friend (didn’t even drink. Ever.) who went through a minor head fuck when he realised that all his favourite writers, artists and musicians were absolutely munted/ drug fiends/rampaging party animals on the regular. Especially when they were “being creative,” lol. Also, TIL what Chelsea boots are.

every single sentence is a winner … 😂😂😂

“Are you unable to look in the mirror and realize that this city is full of genetically unfortunate people apparently too poor to buy beauty, including most of yourselves? Even gently botched plastic surgery suggests an attempt was made to try, and that counts in my books.”

Wooooo another day another frosty/paggro response from the boss for something reasonable. But, in good news, he’s agreed to have this now totally unnecessary meeting in two weeks time, after I’ve had my next psychiatrist consult and a coffee catchup with someone in the broader industry who I’m hoping to get some leads from in terms of moving on (I will never forget how she once quite directly told me on the phone that I’m being severely underutilised at where I am right now 😭).

I promise to myself I’ll be out of here by xmas, goddammit.
